New Vids on Youtube

Hey Folks,

We've been posting a few clips from Imaizumi Sensei new dvd on youtube.

Here's a basic kokyu nage. That's me as uke. More clips to follow.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FSsnpvjfnps

The whole 90 min set is available at aikidojournal.com

Best in training,

Lyle

Must be cool seeing yourself on a dvd eh? I've never had the chance to practice kokyu nage before.

To speak ill of anything is against the nature of Aikido

Re: New Vids on Youtube

The coolest part was showing it to my mom . I don't think anyone else really cares much .

It was difficult to do because Imaizumi Sensei asked his ukes to memorize the script and we shot almost continuously, rotating between ukeing for him and them demonstration the techniques while hit sat in seiza.

But, ofcourse, it was fun and good shugyo.

Imaizumi Sensei teaches this style of kokyunage and doesn't teach iriminage (generally speaking, just in case he did 15 years ago or last Wednesday when I wasn't there ). He describes his style as heavily influenced by Tohei's style at the end of his aikikai days, and has mentioned how good a teacher Saito was to him as well.

Soon we'll post a clip of Zenpo-nage techniques with ukemi by Bob Tullman, our chief instructor under Imaizumi Sensei. His ukemi is very dynamic and he has his own way of delivering literally stunning techniques.

Imaizumi is a man of few words and he put a great deal of them on film for us to try and understand. And that is extremely cool.

It looks allot more like an Irimi nage than a kokyunage to me!
I'm baffled by what I see. Is it considered a kokyunage because he's entering the uke (you) from the other side?

Very nice. Just one question, isn't that irimi-nage?

Re: New Vids on Youtube

Very interesting. Good ukemi.

IMHO, I would have called it Irimi Nage ~ omote (only because it just occured to me that irimi nage is almost always ura), also because I think of kokyu nages as nage not grasping uke, which Imaizumi sensei does appear to be doing to your neck.

Keep in mind I am of course not Imaizumi Sensei, so my opinion is just that...my opinioin.

Well, in Ki Society we would call it, katate-tori kokyunage kosa-tobikomi. A cross-hand grab, breath throw, jumping behind (something like that). Or "basic kokyunage," for short.

Looks like what we call morotetori iriminage at my dojo. Interesting!

Re: New Vids on Youtube

Hmmm.... in my (ki society) training we've always called it ryotemochi kokyunage, with perhaps the tag "classic kokyunage" or "tobikomi" at the end. If the throw was from a single cross-hand grab it would be katate kosadori kokyunage tobikomi, in my dojo and the test criteria that I've always read anyway. And that video looks very much like Tohei-style aikido. What is the name of the federation again?

Re: New Vids on Youtube

As a beginner I love the way this technique looks, but I hate it hee hee...most of the times I end up keep spinning with uke or just standing there like a stupid with the arm raised up and uke walking away.
For someone who doesn't do Aikido might seem an easy technique (and of course for most of you here too), but to me it is very hard. It is pretty hard (for a beginner) to understand as principle itself...understanding that you throw uke in the opposite direction you are leading him/her to is kinda hard to digest.
Last time Sensei to help me understand took away the arm and told me to use both hands, like squeezing his face using contrary forces....I just kept spinning with a face squeezing between my hands (poor uke).
Poor Sensei he must have a great patience with me hee hee...

Oops, sorry, I was going off of memory on what the video was showing. I should have looked again. I had remembered the "tobikomi" captioned on the screen. So I'll change the description to "Katatetori Ryotemochi Kokyunage Tobi Komi". How's that?

Shin Budo Kai? Imaizumi, sensei was the chief instructor for Ki Society in the U.S.A. for a short time, before Kashiwaya, sensei.

thanks,

Haha It's still my weakest technique as well! I told my sensei that I don't get it, and he said "don't worry, after 20 years, I still don't feel like I completely got it, either".

So I'm like "Did you say DON'T WORRY?"

But of course he executes it beautifully.

Where I train, katate-dori = attacker is grasping, with one hand, the defenders "same side of the room"-hand (i.e. your left hand is grabbiing my right).

The attack in the video, where I train, would be called morote-dori, "two hands on one".

Some say potato....

Re: New Vids on Youtube

My understanding of "iriminage" and this "kokyunage" is that iriminage involves a forward step with the leg closest to uke and this technique does not. Ofcourse, the are both "kokyunage" in the larger sense.
