YouTube: Aikido - Sword against multiple attackers
Applying Keasagiri against multiple attackers.

What do you think? Should weapons be a part of Aikido training?
What are your thoughts on this video?

Hmm. Looks like a choreographed ukemi drill. I am not sure what the benefit of this type of practice is.
Weapons in Aikido, sure, though it depends on what you are doing with them. There are many ways to fool yourself with bad practice.

Re: YouTube: Aikido - Sword against multiple attackers
It is a way of demonstrating / expanding upon certain principles of aikido, and can (and should?) be practiced for that.
But not a way of using the sword combatatively.

Somewhat stylised, and requiring compliant ukes, but some good aspects nonetheless.
What happens if you do it with a fukuro shinai and allow contact on both sides?
What if it is more freestyle?

Dear Mihaly,
I certainly endorse weapons work in Aikido. In this video I see little benefit in this method of training.I would have preferred to see an application of kesa giri on a one to one basis. There does not appear to me that the demo shows any sense of zanshin, maai or taisabaki. On the other hand it looks fun, energetic enough and the ukes do fair ukemi. To summarise , the clip shows a energetic, fun type exercise .Whether the clip has any real practical use or is martial is open to question.Cheers, Joe

Re: YouTube: Aikido - Sword against multiple attackers
Terrible posture, and everyone is "cutting" with their arms alone. Fun ukemi drill, teaches very little about actual sword use. I'd send the students back for remedial sword basics, and do the drill with fukuro shinai in the future to allow more sincere attacks.

Re: YouTube: Aikido - Sword against multiple attackers
I hope that isn't some kind of technical training. Looks like there's good potential for a nice ukemi drill (I'll have to post a video of a three-person ukemi drill I like doing!), and even a basic randori movement drill (having the attackers come in at various and unexpected angles).
A good distance drill version would be having uke with different length weapons and doing shomen, tsuki, or yoko strikes.
Sometimes its nice to just do a fun drill like that, kind of get away from too much technical overload. We'll do suwari dodgeball every once in a while to decompress and just have fun with a little bit of technical training infused.
