Preference?

I just had a question for everyone out of curiosity.

Bokken or jo: which do you prefer, and why?

Thanks in advance.

Re: Preference?

Jo.

Reason: Preciously attended some lessons on Mu-so Shin-do Ryu jodo and am impressed with Jo's potential, but I suspect I would also say the same for bokken if I ever had the opportunity to take some koryu kenjutsu lessons.

Another reason is bokken is a replica of a shinken, so learning bokken is always a substitute of learning shinken; whereas learning jo means learning jo, i.e., it is not a substitution/replica. I hope I make sense.

Re: Preference?

I enjoy both a lot but if I had to pick only one I would go with the jo. When I was studying Tae Kwon Do I did a lot of training with the katana so the jo is something different for me to work with.

Harmony does not mean that there are no conflicts,
for the dynamic spiral of existence embraces both extremes.

Re: Preference?

Prefer for what? I would say that in general I prefer a carbine, but that is just me.

Agreed but from the point of view of Kendo rather than Iai.

I always think that Jo would have so many possibilities but when all is said and done, I like the bokken more.

Cheers,

Matt.

bo and jo. I like being able to use both ends and all sides, instead of just the edge and point.

Re: Preference?

Ken. Aikido comes from ken-jutsu. Training helps me see that.

Re: Preference?

I prefer bokken and shinken. I just love practicing sword and just plain obsessed with Japanese swords in general.

Re: Preference?

I like working with the jo. If I'm in a life threatening situation (outside my house), I'm not likely to find a sword available, so training with my jo makes my broomstick waza more formidable.

Re: Preference?

Definitely jo. I love the fluidity of it. And it's an added bonus that you can throw people with your jo, and you can also throw them with their jo (always good for a startled moment).

We have more instruction on "how aikido is like the ken" than "how aikido is like the jo" but I've seen compelling demonstrations of both.

Re: Preference?

which begs me to ask, which child would you kill?

i prefer the jo, since i suck with the ken. of course, i suck with the jo, too. i'd prefer a jo that had a shakuhachi built into it.

Re: Preference?

Bokken.

I just have an affinity for swords, wooden or otherwise...that's all, really.

Cheers!

Re: Preference?

I prefer jo. To me it just seems much more versatile.

For the most part there is only one way to hold a bokken. A jo can be held several ways and you also don't have to be as careful. But i do love bokkens too.
