This Old Square

Two years ago I started tai chi chuan lessons with McGouirk Sensei in Whittier, CA, thinking my 50-year-old body wasn't up for much else. However, when I saw aikido in action at the dojo, my eyes popped out and I gasped, "Ooooh, Must Do That!"

I've been progressing oh so slowly in aikido for a year now. There's some chance I'll be able to do a forward roll soon, although more like a square than a circle... thump ... thump ... thump ...

Thanks to Janet Rosen for pointing me to AikiWeb.

Re: This Old Square

I have in-laws in Whittier. I did not realize there was Aikido that close by. Welcome to Aikiweb. Keep rolling the corners will wear off of the squares.

Re: This Old Square

I have often claimed to become a brick over the weekend...sometimes I manage to knock a few of the corners off before practice is over....
It DOES get better with time though.

Re: This Old Square

Hi Linda

Welcome to the forum and kudos to you for taking up aikido without listening to that 'I'm too old for this' voice. I find that really admirable. I myself have just turned 35 and I feel my bones squeak and my tendons shatter just a little more with each training, but I refuse to let it stop me. I'll just have to warm up a bit more each time and give each movement a little extra attention.

My mother took up tai-chi at the age of 60, and it has been really good for her. She even joined me for an aikido-class once, but she lives far away in a town with no aikido.

Keep up the good work. Aikido is for everybody and for all ages. For example Nishio sensei was an awe-inspiring teacher and moved with tremendous ease and speed well into his seventies, so you may just have several decades of aiki-fun ahead of you.

All the best

Hi, Jerry -- yes, Aikido Ai dojo is in Uptown Whittier, on Comstock Avenue near Philadelphia. Drive by next time you're visiting the in-laws. And thanks for the nice welcome note!

Re: This Old Square

Hi, Jorgen -- thanks for the warm welcome note.

I find it takes me forever to warm up. Knees don't want to bend. Leg muscles are tight. Ankles won't make those kinds of moves! I'm still struggling just to sit seiza. I keep telling myself that in a year I'll look back on this and laugh.

My sensei is 72 years old, so I feel like a young whipper-snapper in comparison. He tells me to take it slowly... but he also knows that I'll be able to bend, roll and fall with the rest of them someday soon. I enjoy the support, consideration, and encouragement of the entire dojo membership.

I look forward to chatting with you again!
