Aikido Shugyo

Has anyone here read the book Aikido Shugyo, by Gozo Shioda? The English version is due to be released later this month (it was originally released in Japanese in 1991).

If anyone has, I'd like to hear your comments (I'll probably buy it anyway).

Hey Jim!

I have the Japanese version. Its quite interesting. I have only read the first few chapters. He goes on about his introduction to aikido and comparing it to judo, karate and boxing. He also talks about how he used to go with his friends to rough areas of Tokyo in order to test their aikido against gansters.

I haven't seen the English version yet.

It was at the expo. I'm about half-way through and find it worth the 20-some odd dollars it cost already. A hale individual not interested in mumbo-jumbo. A breath of fresh air!

I'd also highly recommend Amdur's Dueling with Osensei (http://www.ellisamdur.com/DuelingwithOsensei.htm)

Hey there Darin!

Yes, I think I'll get the book - the darn web site doesn't work right now though!

Check out this article by Michiharu Mori, 6th dan in Yoshinkan Aikido (Australia). He was the last Uchi deshi of Kancho Shioda (for 10 years) and he talks about his experiences. Yikes! I'm afraid of Shioda!
