Best sound to make when doing tech?
This guy says 'doosh' whenever he fake-punches. I tell him there's no need to make mouth-sounds when doing this but he shrugs and keeps doing it. Just wondering if anyone can recommend a better mouth-sound than 'doosh'. Thanks

You can't just go ahead and change what you sound like when the sound comes out involuntarily like that.

I think "doosh" is still better than a person making kiais at the wrong end all the time.

Hi !
I think we must make a distinction between a
funny sound and a real kiai, the first time I
felt the difference between a technique with
and without kiai it was a shock,me being uke,
I felt the diffence in the power so much,it literally felt like I was being slammed into the mat though the tecnique was performed no
different than without kiai.
I now know it is safer to train without kiai
but I also know that if I need to defend myself that kiai will turbocharge your techniques power.
Train safely - Chr.B.

... slightly tangential, but does anyone else ever get "Peas Porridge Hot, Peas Porridge Cold" stuck in their head during tenkan practice? You know, when everybody's tenkaning at the same time?

Dose he make sounds in other situations that don't need it? for instance dose he mute video games and make his own sound effects?
Oh, just for something to look at for sounds. In chi gong there are different sounds for different organs and parts of the body. You might pick a sound from that, if it helps.

I do get a children's song stuck in my head, but it happens during random techniques and the words are changed from what I remember as a kid. It goes
************
Be Kind to your uke
Though they don't deserve it
Remember that uke is
A difficult stage of life
They're apt to be nervous
And over-excited
Confused by their daily storm and strife
So treat them with patience
And sweet understanding
In spite of the foolish things they do
Some day you may wake up
And find you're an uke, too
*************
People from my dojo will attest that I actually sing this sometimes when I get caught up in the fun of it all.
The song I learned when I was a kid had the word 'parents' instead of 'uke.' I don't know what the original song is, though.

Good lyrics! What about the music?
Bye
Erminio (I think I'm going to be uke, maybe I could sing this song to my tori)

It's what you do right now that makes the difference.

Just shake your head, laugh, and let it go.
Once you discover the sounds that work to enhance movement, those sound effects of a bad movie will be quite laughable.
While your friend is being a characterture, you should enjoy it ... while you take the time to learn to breathe properly and learn the proper sounds.

I had a sensei who, when we were first learning shihonage, pointed out that it was a waltz-like rhythm (1-2-3 throw). So now, sure enough, I hear the Blue Danube Waltz every time I do this technique

Very nice, Jim!
Your body's doing shihonage...
Your'e hearing the Blue Danube Waltz...
Do you have an image of the space station from Kubrick's 2001 lolling around in empty space, with the stewardess putting the pen back into the pocket, etc, too?
Because that's something!

~~I make all sorts of different sounds at different times because they just come out. One friend accuses me of 'fake Japanese'. Also tend to sing under my breath if so moved...oooo, did I admit that out loud?

No, but when I do it wrong, I sometimes feel like an ape-man pounding uke's arm bone into the mat

When I first started training when the sensei would punch at me I swore he was saying "WUSS!" which did seem appropriate.
After watching the last round of first kyu tests the other sempai and I came up with a song (to the tune of "Forty ninth street bridge song", or "feelin' groovy")
Slow down, you move too fast
You got to make the waza last
so Relax, center down
Extend your ki
And there goes uke!
So on occasion I find myself humming "there goes uke" although it's frequently "OOPS"

You know, occasionally my sensei makes this sound that sounds a lot like a long, slow, breathy
beeeeeyyaaaattttccccchhhhh
He is partial to sound effects in general, but usually he sounds more like a Ty Fighter.

On the tangent of songs getting stuck in your head, once I had "When I'm 64" stuck in my head during class...why I don't know. Then there was the morning when we were about to bow in and I could not get "The Purple People Eater" out of my mind.

Personally, my sound effects all go back to comic books, especially Marvel (Spiderman), and DC's Batman...Foom! Swoosh! and Thwapp!
are big fave's.
But then, I try to fine-tune the strike to the noise: yokomon-uchi (earrraough! -airplane); tsuki (see above); and the ever-famous katata-dori kiai ("Gimme yer lunch money, punk!").
Of course, then there's the kiai for falling ("OK! Call it a draw, then?").
Happy ukemi!

My personal uke-for-a-nikkyo kiai's:
Level 1:"Owie owie owie owowowow..."
Level 2: "Leggoleggoleggoleggo!!"
Level 3: "Ferchrissekestopyougoddamnsadist!!"
