Respect...
With all the discussions about respect, etc., just a quick note.
We live in Altadena. I've helped a bunch of friends evacuate their homes in the last few days. I've helped relocate animals. We're storing people's belongings at our house with extra cars parked in our driveway. We're close but far enough away where we won't be in any danger. But a number of our friends are under mandatory evacuation orders and are stressed and terrified.
Today I took the day off from working to take my daughter and a friend of hers also from Altadena to Universal Studios for a few hours. Just to get them away from the sounds, the planes, the helicopters, and most of all the smoke. I shot the attached photo from Universal. This is about 25 miles away from the start of the fire that has now consumed 100,000 acres. The humidity is very low so there are no clouds in the sky. That is smoke covering the panorama.
A huge number of people are fighting this fire. A huge number of people have come to town to help. The outpouring of help is truly heartening.
And tragically two firefighters have already lost their lives.
So today I was reading through some of the threads here that usually press my buttons and I realized... In the larger scheme of things... It is all just a blip. Hug your spouse, hug your kids, call your family and friends, and thank those people who keep us safe in our homes. In the end the really important issues have nothing to do with whose waza sucks more...

Keith -
How is it we keep forgetting this most basic of lessons? That's what I want to know. ...
....but you'll probably just say it's something about being a human .. and you'd probably be right.
Thank you.
be safe.

Re: Respect...
A quick shot taken from my roof a few days ago. Those men and women fighting that fire and the flying those planes have my complete respect. I watched one large plane carve through our very steep canyons just to drop a load of water on an area racing towards a few houses. In that heat, that terrain, those updrafts and all the unpredictable effects the weather causes. Amazing.

Re: Respect...
I try to live w/ the awareness that either a wildfire or an earthquake could hit at any time, not in order to live in fear, but rather to walk each step mindful of universe's dispassionate nature and of my only control being how I am in each moment.
I don't succeed all the time but the intervals spent in this state seem to be longer and more frequent.
