Kotegaeshi works well for handgun disarming because the muzzle of the gun immediately points up and away from the victim/nage, and the ensuing pain compells uke to drop it.

There's no question Aikido is effective in disarming someone. But you also have to keep in mind that the man was not being attacked, so this wasn't combat (although it technically could be considered that.)
