Re: If we can't laugh at ourselves...
... we have no right to laugh at anyone, or possibly anything, else.
Wouldn't that be a lousy life.

I also liked the Fruit Aikido video (link on same page as your link). Wish I could follow that well.

Re: If we can't laugh at ourselves...
To be fair, Demetrio, the "female version" was intended to be an artistic exhibition, it just happened to use elements of aikido and was performed by aikidoka. Those Dutch folk can get artsy real quick if you don't keep them pinned down, and I have the ceramic cups and bowls to prove it.
That first one though, with the guys, even if I can appreciate it from an aikido standpoint, should have been accidentally erased. nice guitar though.

Re: If we can't laugh at ourselves...
Well, if I am not totally mistaken I happened to be present at a Shodan test they did at that dojo, and I was quite impressed. OK, the music improvisation bit was unusual at first, but then I found it quite thought provoking and an interesting perspective on practice, especially connection and emotion - in a positive sense. And in fact it was only about the last fifth of what was - to my unqualified eyes - a very solid and comprehensive display of armed and unarmed techniques (which apparently did not make it onto youtube). So, ok, this may not be everybodies cup of tea, but I think we should be careful to judge it out of context - its just one feature of a particular way of practice.

FWIW, Kenji Tomiki used to have people do randori to music - when the music stopped you threw the person from whatever position you happened to be in.

Re: If we can't laugh at ourselves...
I have to agree with Nicholas on the sandan test video, though I would like to see what ended up on the cutting room floor too. The dancing thing they did in the other videos was a bit cheesy, but with smooth technique like that, she's earned her bit of brie.
Of course it helps they set the piece to one of my favorite Seal songs...

Re: If we can't laugh at ourselves...
oh the shame!!!! what the hell is going on with these clips?! If O'sensei could see them he would scrap his idea of a world united by akido. I mean, really, morris dancing in hakama? what happened to it being a MARTIAL art? I dont doubt the skill of the people in these films (well, not entirely! lol) but c'mon! Its no wonder people think aikido was in the missing scenes from brokeback mountain is it?

Hi Nick
Long time no see my friend.
Anyway, as for your thoughts.........well, I appreciate your comments but can you really imagine Sensei Emmerson putting up with that on his tatami. I wonder if they would pass a Dan grading with him whilst doing that.
I agree with Lee Mulgrew it's a martial art first and foremost but it is in the humour section so I suppose we all really should laugh about it.
See you soon I hope mate
