Even shihans dont have eyes in the backs of their heads. Get the drop on someone, they're done. Armed, yudansha, military, cage fighter, power lifter, gangster, psychopath, all fall down with a 2x4 to the back of the bean.

Even if someone doesn't get the drop on, one good/lucky shot turns the tides.
Hi Krystal,
Well said.Joe.

I got hit with a jo on the back of the bean once. Sucker was moving, too. Fortunately only a glancing blow, or I'm sure I would have gone down, instead of giving my dojo-mate an annoyed look. We were both incredibly lucky.

Actually, you might be surprised, Krystal. Training in awareness and perception can and does result in states that allow for a much greater range of senses - with a feeling/attention that is even greater than the physical eyes can "see."

"Seeing" from our eyes is just a habit we get programmed to use. With proper sensitivity training, people can "see" with many different facilities other than just the physical eyes.

Hi Krystal

I was once asked " Sensei, what technique would you use if someone crept up behind you and hit you on the back of the head with a bottle ? "
I replied " I would probably fall down unconscious ".

Re: Aikido as an educational system

Krystal, a place to start might be a concept that's sometimes referred to as " soft eyes."
