Please help with technique name!!
Hello! I need help learning the name of an aikido technique. An opponent is charging at you and you drop into a little ball at their feet such that they are forced to fall/roll over you. Does anyone know this name? Help please!!! Thanks!

Re: Please help with technique name!!
It seems that Aiki Otoshi involves stepping behind uke and lifting their legs to throw them backward over your leg. This is similar to Judo's Sukui Nage (scooping throw). I am thinking of the art where a charging opponent is suddenly faced with you dropping into a crouch at their feet such that they have no choice but to fall/roll over you. Is this also called Aiki Otoshi?

That's an aikido technique? In first grade we just called it "dropping into a little ball at your charging opponent's feet."

Re: Please help with technique name!!
We have something similar that we call sudori in our dojo, however it is usually preceded with a fake upward gesture so as not to give away the intent to drop, and timing is critical. Ending up in hunkers with the uke standing in front of you is not a good position to be in. We mostly do it from yokomenuchi strike.

Nice one!
And Takeno Sensei is applying it to Robert Mustard Sensei (of "Angry White Pyjamas" fame)!

Re: Please help with technique name!!
Here's Takeno Sensei again... It is called a koshinage in this clip (NB, "irimi-duki" is a misspelling, it should be irimi-tsuki or irimi-zuki)

Re: Please help with technique name!!
good clip. Love watching Shioda Kancho do those...makes it clear why some of my seniors would quake at the thought of being called up as uke...
Best,
Ron

Ahhh, just another example proving that aikido doesn't work. How I wish my aikido doesn't work as well as Takeno Sensei's.

Re: Please help with technique name!!
I think there may be a subtle difference between Aiki-Nage and Sudori (and believe me I am no expert on this). Here's my interpretation..
Aiki-Nage: Nage throws uke using only his body (no hands). Kinda like a koshi-nage but with no hands.
Sudori: Uke literally falls over nage due to his own excess energy.
The naming sort of makes sense. Sudori may come from the japanese term meaning "passing through without stopping"
Aiki-Nage indicates nage has exerted a throw of some sort.
Perhaps also Sudori is just a variation of Aiki-Nage where actual contact is missing.

Re: Please help with technique name!!
I like the Takeno sensei video.
I also know the technique as aiki-nage or ashi barai (foot sweep) when tori goes very low very fast to sweep uke's feet with his body.

It's not a misspelling, it's Nippon-shiki romanization, the style taught in Japanese schools. As "ta" becomes "da" when voiced, so does "tu" (tsu) become "du" (zu).
What I like about the video Ron posted is that while Mr. Takeno's third uke was rather exhuberant, Mr. Mustard was giving strong, sincere attacks, and not sacrificing himself for the embu. But Mr. Takeno's technique was nonetheless crisp and powerful. Very nice.
