Re: Poll: Do you think studying aikido can allow people to develop "supernatural" pow
This is from Merriam-Webster:
Main Entry: supernatural
Function: adjective
1: of or relating to an order of existence beyond the visible observable universe; especially : of or relating to God or a god, demigod, spirit, or devil.
2 a: departing from what is usual or normal especially so as to appear to transcend the laws of nature
b: attributed to an invisible agent (as a ghost or spirit)
I think the answer to the poll is closely linked to how you define the term, supernatural.

Re: Poll: Do you think studying aikido can allow people to develop "supernatural" pow
I am sure that those folks who voted 'yes' like myself, thought along the lines of 'zanshin', 'extending ki', and so forth. These things can seem supernatural to the uninitiated. At the same time, these phenomena are not 'tricks', but a true benefit of practice.

IMHO, as long as they are natural, they can be developed. But, as soon as you think of them as super you lose them. Aikido is only the tool.

Yeah, "aikido powers" are super and natural, but not so supernatural.

My Aikido gave me a very super healthy cardio-vascular system from the endless getting up from the mats.
My aikido also gave me super muscular legs, from the countless hours of doing kihon dosa and suawri-waza techniques.
Boon.

Re: Poll: Do you think studying aikido can allow people to develop "supernatural" pow
Arthur C. Clarke (of "2001 A Space Odyessy" and other great sci-fi books fame) said
"Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic".
The same can be applied to anyone sufficiently trained and skilled in anything that mere mortals have not been trained in.
Its all physics and your ability to effortlessly and flawlessly execute the technique.....
I'll reserve supernatural for God, and since none of us are, then it ain't supernatural.

To me if you can teach it, it is not supernatural.

Re: Poll: Do you think studying aikido can allow people to develop "supernatural" pow
There's a lot of stuff in Aikido that looks really impressive, actually works and can appear supernatural to someone who isn't as well trained.
But it ain't magic. It's physics. Well, and timing and sometimes a bit of psychology.
I think sometimes there is something even beyond those things in 'ki', but I still wouldn't call it supernatural. Beyond our natural perception, perhaps, but how many of us can perceive molecules moving about us? So, does that make molecules supernatural?
So, even if ki is more than physics, timing and psychology (and I'm not convinced it is), I still wouldn't call it supernatural.
Another sci-fi writer who also subscribed to Arthur C. Clarke's idea about technology and magic went on to say, "Supernatural is a null word".

Exactly.
O'Sensei lived 86 years of which over 70 of these were dedicated to practicing. His techniques appeared to be supernatural but were perfectly natural to him.
