Better For What?

I often hear the question, "Which martial art is better?" My response is always "Better for what?" I finally sat down and wrote out all my thoughts about it in this blog.

What do you think? How would you answer the question?

Re: Better For What?

A martial art is a tool. Like any tool, it has its specific purpose.
So I agree, what do you need fixing?

In a real fight:
* If you make a bad decision, you die.
* If you don't decide anything, you die.
Aikido teaches you how to decide.

Re: Better For What?

When I teach patients at the hospital, I try to teach them Why.

When I taught a young Hispanic woman about keeping her central line clean and covered to avoid infections, she found herself without dressing supplies and her old dressing coming off. She cleaned the area well, secured sterile gauze to her chest with duct tape, keeping the puncture wound sterile and the dressing intact. No infection. I never taught her that kind of MacGyvering, she just knew the Why, the principles.

For martial arts practice, if I don't Understand How a movement or a tool relates to the same basics I was taught on day 1, or I don't Understand What I am doing and how to use it to full advantage (or what disadvantages are present), I'm probably doing it wrong. Not getting it - not really doing it. No understanding of How, Why, What; no intention. Probably half-hearted practice or skipping the movement altogether in solo practice. Thousands of minimally informed (or uninformed) repetitions.

Thanks, I always enjoy your writing.
