I always figured that if I was sick and it could potentially get others sick I should be responsible enough to stay at home and take the time off needed not only for my body to get better, but so I dont get others I care for sick.
If I train, and get my seniors sick then they in turn have to take time off, and in the end we all lose.

I voted no here, but it was depend on how sever the cold was. However I have refused to train with someone who seems to be very sick. (especally here in Taiwan were SARS killed a bunch of people).

I ask myself, "Would I want to train with me?" I've skiped practice before due to a cold. I've also skiped when my arms where covered in a poison ivy rash. It is not contagous, but very nasty to look at and I'm sure nobody wound have wanted to grab my wrist anyway. I didn't evey want to grab it.

aah, the subtle atemi of the projectile sneeze, the ever useful coughing bow in kotegaeshi, the wheezing ukemi, it all comes flooding back.
I confess, had to say yes, but in my defence, I was the only teacher available that night.

I'll go to class, but if I'm really sick, I'll sit, watch and take notes.

I probably wouldn't go, but not out of sense of responsibility to others, but because I'm always ready to grab an excuse to be lazy.

It has been confirmed that cold viruses are transmitted more by touch than by breath. Also people are most infectious just before symptoms fully emerge. Therefore anyone practicing aikido (with partners/uke) is virtually assured of passing it on. I do not wish that for my fellow kohai/sempai.

As someone who had a cold and had to miss my time at the dojo monday night (my only solace from a viscious pregnant wife) I say that it is best not to go to class.
Besides getting someone else sick during all those throws and pins (infected sweat drippin' everywhere) having a fever or being too tired could result in injury. A simple breakfall, done incorrectly, could result in a bad bruise or worse...
I tried going back to class last night (still gettin' over the cold, but I felt well enough) and had to sit out a bit but it was good to be back. Maybe there should have been a fourth option such as : Go to class but sit and watch?

You have obviously never seen me with a cold. Its ugly and I tend to hibernate.
Since colds can be contagious, IMHO I thinks its very disrespectful and selfish to train when sick because it spreads infection.
So my vote is, no.

In as much that I could like to practice even with this handicap but I agree with Dr. Lynn that it would be very disrespectful and selfish to practice with cold aside from the fact that it could be best for the person to rest than go the dojo to practice.
Therefore, my vote is no.

But is it still acceptable to go to the dojo only to watch, or should you isolate yourself completely by not going at all?
(I'm only asking because I have a cold and class tomorrow night)

As long as you don't sneeze on people, yes.
Many of the classes from which I have benefitted the most over the years have been classes I watched from the sidelines because of sickness or injury.
And to draw an example from outside the walls of the dojo, my son runs track and the coach's expectation is that injured team members will dress and travel with the team. Having seen how he feels about not being with his team when he has had to stay home because he was just too sick to be out of bed, the policy makes a lot of sense to me.
Hope this helps,
Fred Little

If I really want to train, I'll take Bennadryl so I don't sneeze and drip snot on my partners. Its the least I can do.

Again.
The idea that you can only get or give a cold by coughing, spitting, snotting on someone is false. Cold viruses are transmitted by touch. With this in mind, it is probably ok to observe, of course. But if you are sick and you waza...you cauza... colds-possibly in everyone you touch!
