George Simcox sensei is a great guy and a heck of a teacher, too. I don't know if he makes any regular appearances to teach in the Bay Area, but you may want to keep your eye on Pietro Maida sensei's dojo (www.kiaikido.org) to see if he'll drop in some time.

George and Chuck,
Right on! Right on!
I'm a 48 year old nidan, somewhat horizontally challenged, but I can hold my own in stamina, too.
The best part about my teacher (besides the way he teaches) is that his responses constantly enlighten me, With his background of aikido, aikijitsu, tae kwon do, te, and boxing, he definitely can hold his own, but when in on-mat or off-mat situations I sometimes feel he avoids the situation, I realize he's won by not fighting, literally or figuratively. Takes more strength, but is also incredibly more elegant in execution. Also, brings to mind "no one comes out of a fight better than they went in."

As my teacher says at times, "The best way to 'win' your fights is to have no enemies to begin with. No enemies, no fighting, neh?"

Hmm... Maybe that's what we mean by "stopping the spear." Think think think think think...

I'd like to train at my shihan's sensei's dojo (Suenaka-sensei), but I'd like to make it to Japan and train with Doshu, perhaps after I get out of college, or even high school if I'm that lucky. I'd also like to train with Mitsugi Saotome, and learn some kiatsu with Tohei-sensei (my shihan's sensei's sensei).
