Kyoichi Inoue (10th dan, Yoshinkan) Passes Away

Posted 2017-12-24 15:38:20 by Jun Akiyama

I have received word that Kyoichi Inoue (10th dan, Yoshinkan Aikido) has passed away. Born in 1935, he started training at the newly founded Aikido Yoshinkan in 1955, becoming uchideshi under Gozo Shioda. He taught metropolitan police officers as a martial arts instructor from 1970 until 1994. Inoue became the second director of the Yoshinkan in 2002. He received his 9th dan from Shioda in 1992 and his 10th dan in 2009 from the International Budo Federation.

My condolences go out to his family, friends, students, and loved ones.

Re: Kyoichi Inoue (10th dan, Yoshinkan) Passes Away

I met Inoue Kyoichi Sensei at the first Aiki Expo, organized by Stanley Pranin in Las Vegas. Stan had asked me to go as a full-blown instructor, and added that if I agreed to go, then Hiroshi Isoyama Shihan would also go. (I was Chairman of the IAF at the time.) Inoue Sensei was also there as a featured instructor. The experience was chastening in many respects.

I remember on one occasion at the Expo that Inoue Sensei was somewhat disheartened, because it seemed to him that what he was teaching was rather dull, by comparison with the more 'spectacular' classes of other instructors. All he had to teach were basics. What does one say?

We became friends and always exchanged Japanese new year cards. I have kept the ones he sent to me. We occasionally met at the All-Japan Aikido Demonstration, organized by the Aikikai Hombu, to which he always came as an invited guest.

My he rest in peace.

Re: Kyoichi Inoue (10th dan, Yoshinkan) Passes Away

I have so much respect for Inoue Sensei, who was very generous with his thoughts and advice on those occasions we had to talk. His dedication to Aikido was remarkable, and we have indeed lost another pillar.
