"Remember you are dust..."

This blog article entitled "Remember you are dust..." is a collection of reminiscences from Donald Schnell, a reverend in San Francisco. Included in his memories are those of dojo friend Mary Stein whom he met on the mat thirty years ago. From the article:

"I'd been gone from the old dojo for more than a year when it finally closed. That's when my dojo-colleague Mary appeared at the new dojo. Mary's courage impressed me again, a slight woman, now approaching eighty joining this fast, vigorous practice. Her courage impressed me, but I was also a bit chagrinned when she, after joining the new dojo more than a year after me, completed successfully re-tested for black belt more than a year ahead of me."

Re: "Remember you are dust..."

When I lived in SF I knew Mary as a fellow co-op shopper and sometimes training partner at one or another dojo. She is a delightful person and I recommend her book, "The Gift of Fear: Lessons from Aikido."

Re: "Remember you are dust..."

Beautiful, inspiring, comforting.... I read it fast, forwarded it immediately to our own Pastor Mark, Lutheran Pastor of our Episcopal Church here, who runs and cycles for his own training but might be interested in reading about ours... then I read it again. A lot to think about, thanks Jun and Janet!
