12/31/1969 4:59pm [from Jun Akiyama]

Morihei Ueshiba sensei, the founder of aikido, passed away 33 years ago today on April 26th, 1969. His ashes were distrubuted among the Kozanji in Tanabe, the Aiki Shrine in Iwama, the Ueshiba family cemetery in Ayabe, and at the Kumano Grand Shrine. The founder was also declared a Sacred National Treasure of Japan posthumously. Is your dojo doing any kind of memorial ceremony?

Looking for Ideas

I've heard some places don't hold practice, other places do the 100 throws exercise. I am going to bring some fresh flowers to practice tonight. I am anxious to know what other places have planned.

It's interesting to hear that some places don't hold any training today. Although it's not meant to be a "memorial" seminar, per se, we're holding our four day Spring Seminar right now. My teacher said that there are dojo all over which are performing ceremonies and such to honor the passing of the founder. He continued to say that, in his mind, the best way to honor the founder was for us to keep training. I think we've scheduled 14 hours or so of training over these four days...

Well, in my dojo, we held no classes last April 26th. Instead, we had an "O´Sensei video-night" to remember him. After that, sensei told us stories and thoughts about O´Sensei. There were about 25 people there. We stayed for an hour. We do this every year to have in mind that O´Sensei has left this terrenial world just 33 years ago, and in his time, he had already been an incredible human being. We spoke about the young history of aikido and its happy growth till these days.

We lit candles and held a short memorial service to honour O'Sensei's legacy and memory
