BJJ for SoCal Aikidoka

Jiai Aikido and Harris International have joined together to offer a unique grappling class for Southern California Aikidoka.

This class teaches the techniques of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu with an emphasis on their Aiki nature. Come and join us in a non-competitive environment, where the fundamentals of posture, blending, timing, and technique are stressed, while egos and injuries are checked at the door.

Classes are held on Saturdays, from 2-4 p.m. Details and directions can be found at www.jiaiaikido.com.

With 2300 square feet of mats, there is plenty of room for you and your friends to see how well these two beautiful arts compliment each other. I look forward to seeing you there!

Sincerely,

Roy Dean

Mits Yamashita in Long Beach has been doing this for over 10+ years and has a student in Mariposa that is doing the same. It's a regular part of their training after Aikido classes.

Paul,

Thank you very much!

Steven,

Mits Yamashita has long been one of my heroes, and his journey in learning BJJ from the Gracies inspired me to head down a similar path. In my opinion, more schools should be utilizing this approach, but few, if any, are. Please come down and roll sometime, I'd love to have you on the mat!

Sincerely,

Roy Dean

Re: BJJ for SoCal Aikidoka

Great stuff, I plan to offer something similar myself eventually (if I ever get the hang of that BJJ stuff). Do you mind me asking your experience levels in Aikido and BJJ? One of issues behind not offering this approach I think is people not feeling they are qualified enough in both arts to legitimately do so.

Re: BJJ for SoCal Aikidoka

Hi Roy,

Not sure if you know that I am a student of Mits Yamashita and studied with him for 16 years. I was there during the earlier BJJ training with the Gracies. In fact, my most favorite story of humility came at the hands of Royce Gracie, before the UFC crazy started.

I taught combat grappling for some time here in Sacramento but shortly after September 11th, all the weirdo's started showing up, so I stopped offering it publicly. We're about to start the program up again, though keep it to our current students only.

...cheers

Re: BJJ for SoCal Aikidoka

Michael,

I was awarded Shodan in Aikikai Aikido in 1999, and at the end of last year, I was promoted to brown belt in BJJ. Additionally, I have a Sandan in Seibukan Jujutsu and Shodan in Kodokan Judo.

Steven,

I assumed you were a student of Sensei Yamashita, and I think you've been fortunate to study under such a progressive teacher for so long! Most students should be so lucky. The offer is still extended. If you're ever in our neck of the woods, please come by and roll with us as our guest.

Lynn,

I wish we could have crossed paths at the seminar, but I wasn't able to attend. I'll definitely make it worth your while if you do drive down! We'd love to have you...

Best,

Roy

Thanks Roy, that marries up with my thoughts, that you really need to be at least purple to be qualified to be teaching a BJJ aspect to your cirriculum

Roy,

Thanks for the kind invitation. I will certainly take full advantage of your kindness should the time ever present itself. If ever in Sacramento, please come visit us as my guest. As for Yamashita Sensei, you should head up the highway and visit him. He is always open to visitors and meeting new people.

Tell him I sent you. Ermmm .. second thought, maybe you shouldn't ...
