Makotokai Edinburgh Demo

As part of the 2005 International Kendo Enbu Taikai (IKET), the Makotokai Aikido Riai will be giving a demonstration of Traditional Aikido (and possibly a short teaching session afterwards).

As well as Kendo and Aikido there will be a number of other arts giving demonstrations, including Judo, Jodo, Karate, kyudo and Iaido.

Not to mention the chance to see some Kendo 8th Dans go at it.

All in all it should be a great day.

The venue for the event is The Centre for Sports & Exercise, University of Edinburgh, 46 Pleasance, Edinburgh EH8 9TJ

For further information check out the following:

Hope to see you there,

Chris.

Hi,

If you're going to be in Edinburgh for the 2nd, remember that there's a G8-related "Make Povery History" march on that day which will be affecting a number of the roads leading to, and near the Pleasance.

You can find details of road closures and the like at:

Thanks Ian we knew about the march, but not exactly where it was going to affect.

Looks like it will be an early start!

Chris.

Re: Makotokai Edinburgh Demo

I found a bit of biography for him at http://www.makotokai.co.uk/page10.html

Given that there's an active " Chiba Buki vs Saito Buki" thread elsewhere on this site it's interesting that Mr. Coyle seems to have a good deal of experience with both.

Re: Makotokai Edinburgh Demo

Stefen,

As far as I know the days events will kick off at around 12, with a procession of all involved and then taiko druming.

We were on first last year around 12.30, I presume it will be the same this year.

I will know more specifics after training on Thursday.

Sensei Coyle teaches Traditional Aikido Riai which includes all aspects of Aikido, with emphisis on the martial side of the art including atemi and weapons.

For more info. check out the web site.

Hope to see you there,

Chris.

Yeah Chris please let us know when you find out the correct time.
By the sounds of things you might need to leave for Edinburgh on Friday.

Re: Makotokai Edinburgh Demo

I just made it home from IKET, where I put in a rather poor performance in the kyu graded embu . I have to say that all the demonstrations were of a very high level and made the day pass very fast. The Aikido demonstration was very good. In particular I enjoyed how they demonstrated a technique with ken or jo, and then empty handed. For those of us with less experience in Aikido, it was very helpful to see the principles explained like this. For those of us who are doing Kendo or Iaido it was also good to recognize some of the things we are doing in empty handed movements.

Thanks for a great show.

Mads
