British Seminars ?

Hi all,

I keep hearing about all these summer seminars and camps going on all over the world (especially the U.S.), and I am getting a little jealous!

I live in the North West of England (Manchester) and I would like to know if there are any seminars plan for up here?

Does anyone know of any?

Thanks,
Rob

Re: British Seminars ?

The next Shodokan ones are in London and this November. Have a look at the BAA web site (google for it) and there should be something there.

Alternatively, try the BAF as they are running things quiet often. Oh, Edinburgh is running many things as well... both the Shodokan club there and the Imawa. Alternatively, check out where and when people are training and make a weekend of going to regular classes. Check Edinburgh and train in Aikikai, Imawa and Shodokan in one weekend on top of seeing the city...

Or orginise one. I'll be happy to come and teach if you can't get Scott or Jon or Jim to come -- since they are all 5th dan and I'm a measly first, I would recommend asking them first!!!

Re: British Seminars ?

Robert,

There are plenty of seminars held in the UK. The BAB web site lists a few of them, see here

http://www.bab.org.uk/courses/courses.html

Others are spread by word of mouth, for instance Endo Sensei was in Ireland for a weekend 2 weeks ago. Chiba Sensei is coming over to the British Aikikai summer camp this summer, further details here

http://www.britishaikikai.co.uk/ss2004.htm

I don't know where you train in Manchester, but my dojo is a member of the Lancashire Aikikai, we have a number of dojo's in and around Manchester, if you belong to one of them, they usually keep up to date on seminars going on.

Ai symbol Re: British Seminars ?

Kewl! Thanks for the info guys!

I currently practice in Sale (South Manchester) at an "independent" dojo. I started (only recently) before I discovered this brilliant site and the advice within. So hadn't thought to have a look around at other clubs.

I have done a little investigation into other dojos/club and plan to visit Manchester Aikido Club (in Stretford) and Maru Aikido - Manchester (in Fallowfield).

If you can tell me of other club in the Manchester area (not suggest which ones are better, I don't want to get into all that ) I would be most grateful.

Thanks,
Rob

Hello Robert,

I wondered whether you would like to visit the Aikido-Database Site, there is a fair selection of events on display of various courses and a calender for the events.

Hi Robert,

Wouldn't dream of pitting dojo against dojo, not the done thing, although I wouldn't hesitate to recommend Sensei's that I have had good experience with.

I'm not up on the area in and around Manchester, so have no idea which club you are near, but the LAA web site lists all of their clubs, see here

http://www.lancashireaikikai.org/nwenglandaikido.shtml

The LAA lineage is from Chiba Sensei through Marion Mucha and our current principal, Bob Spence. I'm sure they would welcome you to visit any of the clubs. Afraid I'm in the Milton Keynes club, so only visit up north for association seminars, of which we hold about 5 a year.

Maybe see you on th emat sometime.

Regards

Bryan

Re: British Seminars ?

Hi Bryan

I notice there is a club in Altrincham, which isn't far from where I live.
Do you know if the club is good? Or do you know of the senseis there?

I will have to add it to my increasing list of dojos to visit.

Thanks again for all the info guys!

Thanks,
Rob

Hi Robert,

I believe that the Trafford Club in Altrincham is the largest of the clubs in the LAA. Andrew Baird is the man in charge, I've met and trained with him a few times, nice chap. Tell him I sent you along there.

regards

Bryan

Re: British Seminars ?

I'd just like to add that my dojo in Bury is also part of the Lancashire Aikikai, and the organisation runs training sessions which are attended by all the clubs in the group, which is a good way of meeting the rest of the organisation and training with a broader range of people than just your own club.

Hi Elizabeth,

I can recommend Graham Harrison too, i`ve trained with him a couple of times, and he taught at the MK seminar earlier this month.

Re: British Seminars ?

There are three Aikido Summer Camps that I know of near you hosting the following 6th dan (hombu registered) and above teachers:

BAF, Chester - Senseis Kanetska, Cottier, Holland and Kobyashi.

UKA, Shropshire - Senseis Sugawra, Smith, Smith, Jones, Brady, Haywood.

BA, Bangor, N Wales - Senseis Chiba, Miyamoto, Chen, Cassells, Mooney.

I know the first two are very good and the third comes highly recomended. Hell, go to all three!

There is a dojo run by sensei Dave Yates in Manchester that you might wan to have a look at.

Well if you can stretch to it I would HIGHLY RECOMMEND going to Komyokan Dojo in Birkenhead. Ezra Sensei is one of the finest teachers of Aikido in the UK, and Komyokan Dojo one of the finest centers for sure.

Here is their website...

http://www.komyokan.aikido.co.uk

If that is too far, there is a KAA dojo that my friend runs in Manchester, see here...

Happy Hunting.
