Becoming a true teacher
Hey All,
I want to be a great teacher and now from reading through this place I see that Training, training and more training gives you what you need on the mat but I am wondering where do you gain the theory and philosophy from Aikido?
Can anyone shed some light on this area?

IMHO the theory and philosophy should be inherent in the teaching on the mat.
I think the quickest way to get to where you want to be, is to be the student of a 'great' teacher.
Other than that, there are many good books, many of which are listed and reviewed on this site.
Best wishes on your journey,
Regards,
Mark

Re: Becoming a true teacher
don't worry too much about the philosophy... that too develops with time and training...
as they say in ZEN i can tell you all about water, but it will not wet your mouth or quench your thirst...

Re: Becoming a true teacher
Become a great student first. Thats difficult enough, blood, sweat, tears and years, and a healthy dose of mental activity.

Re: Becoming a true teacher
A great teacher is someone who inspires his students to go beyond thier goals.
"What is a human being?"
"An acorn"
"...an acorn?..."
"A seed which is not afraid to destroy itself to become a tree"
Anyone who can tell me where this quotes comes from (NO google) will earn a point.

A 'point', not enough of a motivator to even get to google, now if it is a 'pint' you are offering....
Cheers
Mark
p.s. - Neat quote ( no matter where it comes from ).

Re: Becoming a true teacher
Mark,
If you are even in York, come and train with us and we'll get a pint after training. Or the traditional curry... Offer valid for everyone.

Re: Becoming a true teacher
You can get a lot of the philosophy from books, if your teacher is not providing it, class time is for practice.

Re: Becoming a true teacher
Terence,
Being a school teacher already, I would say that as in the school so also on the mat: 1. Be a good student first, 2. Don't forget to remember what it is like to be a student, 3. Have the mind of a child and try to look at things the way a child does.
Always be a student in your thinking! This will make you a great teacher. I am still learning!

Re: Becoming a true teacher
Aikido philosophy should first come from your Sensei, then from books or the like from well known Senseis, then from your imagination/personality from feeling things on the mat. You might stay in true lock step with your Sensei or you might start to deviate in due time.

Re: Becoming a true teacher
My beliefs on teaching are like this: the subject is a skill and teaching is a skill. High in one doesn't mean high in the other. I'm in college now, and I'm definitely picking up on that vibe from some of my teachers. They're smart and know their subject but they just can't get it across. So train your teaching skills at the same time you train your aikido (or any subject for that matter) skills.
|
You'd be surprised at how much aikido philosophy you can pick up on at the end of the party when there's just a couple drunk sempai and you.
