Where does this sound familiar?

http://www.taijiworld.com/internal-martial-arts.html

an extract from the blog;
The 'New Age' movement did more to harm great internal martial arts systems such as Taijiquan than anything else. When these "New Age Hippies" adopted for instance Taiji as theirs, they threw that internal martial art in particular completely out of balance with nature and thereby almost ruining the whole system forever! We cannot be calm and meditate at all times, we cannot be relaxed all the time, we cannot have peace, love dove, all the time as this is just not the way of nature, it is not balanced. And we cannot have an internal martial arts system that is either all hard or all soft.

Re: Where does this sound familiar?

Good old Erle. I seem to remember another article of his in which he suggests that Yang Lu Chan's descendents may have watered down his taiji for mass consumption leaving a legacy that is something of a mixed blessing. On the one hand we are left with a martial art that doesn't quite live up to its reputation anymore. On the other the art is still practiced in some form rather than fading into obscurity.

FWIW,

Dave

Re: Where does this sound familiar?

I would rather see a real art fade into obscurity (meaning it is practiced by a few dedicated) than having it watered down and practiced with mass appeal. What is the point of that? It would no longer serve its intended purpose.

In my opinion, its better left to be practiced and kept alive authentically by those few willing to dedicate themselves towards that goal.

Re: Where does this sound familiar?

I don't know about Taijiquan specifically, but haven't some arts basically done both at the same time? The full form 'fades into obscurity' but is still practiced by a small number of dedicated people - AND a more limited mass-market form develops and becomes very popular.

Re: Where does this sound familiar?

yes, and the problem is they are two different entities entirely with the same name.
