Re: Article From NY Times About Falling
Cheers, Chris. I am a longtime RN and spent my last 8 years doing community case management with frail low income seniors (google MSSP - it is a statewide MediCal waiver program, all our clients were Medi-Medi)
One tip I will pass along: an undiagnosed cause of poor balance and falls going down stairs is that hardly anybody is taught how to do so when they are in bifocals or progressive lenses! Most people just look through the bottom - the reading glasses section for near vision - so everything gets unfocused and woozy. My optometrist told me when I first got into bifocals in my 30s to tilt my head down and look at the stairs with my distance vision lenses. I have asked scores of people, nobody else recalls being taught this. Instead friends tell me of parents who refuse to use bifocals because they feel unbalanced; I had a woman take my AikiBalance course and the only thing she needed was to practice moving her head correctly going down stairs!
