Animals can do aikido too !!!!!

I have two cats that have perfected the dropping down move (the one that takes your legs away as you run to attack the torie)
They can both perform this moce with perfect timing as I walk down the stairs, removing my legs from me and forcing me to fall.

As well as this I have also found that nikeo works on cats. This is also known as revenge.

So, what other moves and animals do??????

Re: Animals can do aikido too !!!!!

Re aikido with animals: It's much harder as they generally have four legs, its so unfair! I know you can do a type of iriminage nage on horses and cows, to get them down. Me, I can barely pick kitten up by the scruff of the neck though

OK, fun one:

What's the most aiki animal?

Kinda like the ole, "If you were an animal which one would you be?' thing.

Aikido - cat? dolphin? jellyfish (ki soc)
Me - goat.

Re: Animals can do aikido too !!!!!

I was watching a number of dogs play "chase me" at the dog park last week, & the lab who was the chasee had a sweet little tai sabaki that he would do just about every time someone was about to catch him that would bring him around behind the lead chase dog so he could nip their hind quarters & then take off again!
totally cool to watch.

Human being...

At least that was Gozo Shioda's response.

Best,
Ron

Re: Animals can do aikido too !!!!!

I once had a Newfoundland dog, an unbelievably gentle creature. A Border Collie once attacked him, leaping up at his throat. The Newfie caught him on the rise with one paw, and executed an ikkyo-type move that landed the Border Collie on his back, with my dog's paw pinning him by the neck. He just stood there for a moment, growling softly, to give the Collie time to think things through, then let him up.
Yours,
Brion Toss

Re: Animals can do aikido too !!!!!

I have a labrador (female). Whenever she meets other dogs, they do what most dogs do as greetings- sniff each others behind! Well, my dog is quite a character and it's not to her standards that other dogs should sniff her from behind, and so, whenever a dog comes to sniff, she does a circular jump at it and makes it roll over on it's back. Looks quite cool, especially when there are more than one dog, and it comes in a series of movements from dog to dog!

Re: Animals can do aikido too !!!!!

Well, perhaps a little context is in order. I believe Ueshiba was testing Shioda, and asked 'what animal would you chose to represent you' or something along those lines. Shioda chose a human being. My impression is that he rejected some of the tendancy in asian martial art to idealize the qualities of animals over humans...which conversely, seems to personify animals.

I'm not sure any two people can completely agree with what 'aiki' is, let alone quantify how much humans in general have as opposed to animals. I do enjoy watching my GF's cats play though. They are extremely fluid and relaxed, seem to have an innate sense of 'openings', and express a wonderfull sense of joy in their play. Can't be anything wrong with that!

But inspite of these wonderous qualities, they still wait for me to feed them every evening, and to give them treats every morning. And are quite content with the situation.

Best,
Ron

My cat is a straight grappler. He takes me to the ground and get's me in his kitty guard (front paws pull in, back paws attack). The only counter is rear scruff grab!!

He's cute and cuddly, but dumb as a brick...like to run full force into tables and walls.

Re: Animals can do aikido too !!!!!

My dog Shadow used to "blend" perfectly with the collar and leash on walks.

She would walk full force, constantly pulling. Suddenly stop as I continued to move forward. This would loosen her choke chain sufficiently. She would step back out of the collar and be free.

Perfect blending to escape the collar!

Needless to say, after the third time this happened, I started hooking the leash to her regular collar and tightening it for walks :-)

Re: Animals can do aikido too !!!!!

I am fortunate (is that the right word?) enough to have both a cat and a springer spaniel dog and watching them "play" fight I can say without doubt that Mr. Lao (cat) is much more Aikidoka than Pebble. Pebble runs round him like some drunk lunatic trying to bite and hit with paws, while he calmy makes small adjustments to his body posistion to avoid the strikes until an opening arrives, then, wham! He explodes with the best Irimi nage/neck & ear biting technique. He also does this taisabaki thing where he ends up underneath her and she completely loses where he has gone until he takes her down with an ikkyo type movement (elbow pinned and teeth sank into her armpit!). The look of confusion is hillarious!

I feel cheated, as someone who has had (or knows some one who has) both cats and dogs, a few spiders and a lizard i have only found them to be (to quote Lyle Bogin) "dumb as a brick" is there a special aiki-pet store that i have missed
