Let's talk about Hakamas!

Can anyone give me information on purchasing a hakama, proper length, what material holds up best to ukemi (i.e. poly, cotton, or a blend of both) how much should they cost or anything else anyone would like to share! Any help would be great! I earned my Shodan in Aikido/Jujitsu in May 05' and have decided it's time I wore a hakama, heck I've earned it, I should wear one.

I've had a bujin and I've had my homemade and I don't like either as much as I LOVE my tetron hak from http://www.budogu.com/

Re: Let's talk about Hakamas!

I got an Iwata hakama. It's beautiful, fits well. Though it's a little harder to fold the pleats after an intense class.

It's also more expensive, and you can only buy it from Japan. I'm thinking of gettng a backup from Bujin.

Re: Let's talk about Hakamas!

I'm a fan of the heavy weave cotton hakamas as I've seen a few poly-blends get torn in intense training. I've seen people wear them a little differently too, from just grazing the ground to about 5 inches above it. I like mine to be about 2-3 inches above ground. Mine was ordered from japan and cost about 100.00 if I recall.
They're interesting to wear! A little awkward at first for me, but I prefer it now and almost feel naked when training without one. Besides, they make cool "wooshing" noises!
Take care,
Matt

Re: Let's talk about Hakamas!

I bought my 100% cotton bujin hakama ($120 at the time) in 1995 and retired it 2 years ago, bought a polyester one for $70 and it started falling apart a year later. I fixed it myself, then fixed my bujin one myself, and I wear the polyester one in the summer and the bujin in the winter. Definetly worth buying a good bujin one. I got a little balling up with my polester one, and definely no balling with the cotton one.

tozando.com is not a bad place to look. I've just bought one of their cheaper tetron hakamas and it's pretty cool. And I got it at a very fair price too.

Re: Let's talk about Hakamas!

You want the bottom of your hakama to be about 2 inches above the floor. When you lower your hips the hem should just touch the floor (thus hide your feet).

Re: Let's talk about Hakamas!

Why in the world would anyone want to try and hide their feet??? They're hooked on to your butt, and quite visible to all that can see.

The hiding of feet by the hakama is just something that someone at some point made up to fill the space left for lack of something better to say...

In reality, when hakama wearers were about to go into action, they hiked up the garment's hems and tucked them in, etc. so that they wouldn't trip over them.

Re: Let's talk about Hakamas!

sorry, if you don't know why you would want to hide your feet. You are correct about hiking them up before combat though.

Re: Let's talk about Hakamas!

sorry, do you have ugly feet? I haven't needed to hide my feet in the past 53 years I've been training. If someone is looking at my feet, I already have them.

Well Chuck I guess some one has to tell you. The legend of your feet has even reached these distant shores. All those hints to increase your hakama length .....

Hi Peter, truth be told, it's not my feet that a long hakama has to hide...

Re: Let's talk about Hakama!

I recommend that you do not believe stories that you hear about anyone. Actions speak louder than words.

The weather here in the Valley of the Sun is beginning to cool off...

I know about Texas... it's why I live in Arizona; where we like our hakama high enough to let a little air circulate...

Best regards,
