Re: home dojos

I have a home dojo. We made our mat from phone books and tire shavings. We had a local tent and tarp company make the cover for us, and it's the best mat I've worked on.

The phone books were free, the tire shavings were free, and the cover only cost about $250US. Compared to the 2000 it would have cost to cover it in swain mats or god knows how much for tatami, it was pretty cheap. For my preference I like the surface about twice as much as the fo-tatami also.

I've been thinking of putting a how to up on our web site, maybe I'll get on that.

Re: home dojos

Affectionately called the Kodobasement here is a recent photo.

We are lucky enough to have many fine calligraphy that are displayed around the dojo. Rather than the stark model, the dojo has more of a home feel with the mementos of long training like some family dojo. We are also lucky to have some tatami that are decades old, but still serviceable. Unfortunately they are on concrete flooring so most dojo we visit feel quite luxurious in comparison.

Sadly, the armor is just visiting...
