I have read alot of history on Sokaku but just how good of a martial artist was he?

Since no one has direct experience with him it's not possible to make a real determination. All information about him is second hand and is available to you in print like everyone else.

Do some research and make up your own mind based on what you find. Like all history, find as many sources as possible and then try to determine what's real and what's not.
