Grading??

I have more or less decided to give the Whitefriar aikido club in Dublin a try and should be dropping in to start learning in the next week. I looked into the club after prompting from a member of these very forums (I cant remember there name but would like to thank them and everyone else who read my last post!) and when I was researching the club and its history I saw that it is a non grading aikido school and just wondered if this is normal or not (im sorry if it's a completely stupid question but keep in mind that im very new to Aikido so I don't know whats what yet). In my opinion this could be a very good environment to learn in what do you all think??

I wonder if the person in charge of the club has a rank. Personally I would not train under someone whose skills have not been recognised by other martial artists.

It may be that the person in charge is not a black belt yet. If this is the case then they can't award belts. In many cases it also means that they can't have insurance. I would definitely check this. No insurance means trainig at your own risk.

However, good Aikido is a lot more important than a belt, so if their Aikido is good and they choose not to grade others, then it should be OK, if you like that particular club.

Just try to find out why they choose not to grade.

Good luck

As far as I know the Whitefriare aikido club does not organise its own gradings, but people wishing to be graded can participate in examens under Alan Ruddock sensei.

I know that quite a few of the people, including the teachers, are actually graded.
