Brazilian jujutsu and aikido - not the usual fighting theme!

A incredibly interesting take on fighting and the preferred outcome by Rener Gracie. The video becomes interesting from 7mins 15s. The concepts of connection and non violence are explored and championed. What are your thoughts?

For transparency I have been studying aikido since 1994, but had a 10 year on and off relationship with it due to my military service. I recently started training in BJJ, initially out of martial interest; but, now because I feel it offers a great deal of opportunities to explore aikido fundamentals from a different stand point. In short I am now a more relaxed and connected aikidoka because of my BJJ training.

I look forward to your opinions.

Paul.

I've been (on and off for the last ten years) doing jits so I'm not surprised.

Re: Brazilian jujutsu and aikido - not the usual fighting theme!

Demetrio,

A very nice video. I found the idea of 'actively' disconnecting from your partner very interesting. It is definitely something I'll take on to the mat the next time I am uke to see how it effects the dynamic of the technique.

Again I believe BJJ offers a great deal of insight into the realm of aikido. Once my club is up and running I will definitely look to include BJJ instructor days in an attempt to introduce another way to look at connection, 'efficient relaxation' & appropriate rigidity.

Given that almost all budo extol the virtue of saving life, why does the aikido community present their art as unique in this fact? For example Yagyu Munenori discussed the idea in great detail and set the idea of katsujinken as the highest aspiration of his art, yet rarely does one hear exponents of the Yagyu Shinkage ryu suggest the idea can be arrived at or indeed understood from day one.
