Question Katate-dori irimi (Kokyu ho)?

I was just wondering if the technique in the following video (it's time-stamped at the technique) is the one described in the subject line? It appears on a list of techniques I have & I'm unsure whether the 'irimi' part makes it any different. Also, are there omote & ura variations & if so, what are they? Any resources would also be appreciated, have found it hard to find some myself

I would honestly ask your Sensei that question. Because what I saw was katate tori sayu nage hansha. Different styles are going to use slightly different descriptions of similar techniques. Besides, it's fun watching Aikido videos with your Sensei anyway. At least I do that a lot with mine.

Re: Katate-dori irimi (Kokyu ho)?

I'd call it either an ude-oroshi or a kokyu nage, depending on who was teaching the class and how precise I wanted to be. I wouldn't call it kokyu ho: in our style, that very specifically refers to the seated, two-hand vs. two-hand kokyu exercise.

As suggested, if this is a test technique for you, ask your instructor what he wants to see. For a katate-dori irimi nage, I would expect to see the "classic" irimi entry, where nage ends up beside/slightly behind uke, facing the same direction, with one hand on uke's neck and the other controlling the grabbing hand. From this attack, that typically requires breaking/slipping the grab with the opposite hand.

Hi Michael,

we call what is shown in the video kokyu ho irimi: Compare Endō Seishiro sensei.
irimi refers to the footwork: Watch Endō sensei's feet.

This is US Aikido Federation syllabus, it is called Hitoe Iriminage. You can look in the google under this name.

You would have to talk with your sensei to find out if he/she is looking for a specific footwork. You can do katatetori kokyuho using irimi, tenkan, tenkai, and tenshin. Some sensei don't care as long as it is kokyuho while some want a very specific footwork version.

Re: Katate-dori irimi (Kokyu ho)?

Well, when it came down to the grading for 5th kyu I was told that a number of techniques would be accepted under that name ( the one in the video included) & I passed! Thanks for your help everyone
