Question on different schools

I may be moving pretty soon and I some looking into what schools are available me in the city I'd like to find myself.

I've never heard of the first organization below. Does anyone know the difference between them or could give me a little guidence?
(Yes if I move I'll likely be visiting both, still interested in hearing what aikiweb has to say on them)

Re: Question on different schools

I can say for sure that the Tenshinkai lineage is a quality one. Although I don't know Tran Sensei personally, I can vouch for his teacher, Dang Thong Phong Sensei. He is a most respected figure in the Aikido scene, and is accomplished in other arts as well. Any instructor who bears his endorsement will be most capable. Look for Phong Sensei's books in any quality bookstore and for his Westminster (CA) Aikikai site on the Web.

Agreed. Check the "Tenshinkai" legitimacy directly with Phong Sensei at the Westminster Aikikai. Its the Hombu Dojo for the International Tenshinkai Aikido Federation. He has had problems with people stealing the name of his style, which was given directly and personally to him by O'Sensei himself.

Re: Question on different schools

The CAF is a well-established organization here in Canada, on the order of the various USAF organizations in the states (or those formerly known as the various USAF organizations in the states), and directly affiliated with Hombu dojo. The chief instructor is Kawahara shihan, who makes a considerable effort to travel to teach at each area under his wing 2-4 times a year. They are a friendly bunch, though I only know a few from Alberta.

My impression from visiting the local CAF dojo and attending their seminars in town is that they teach a very solid technically-oriented program. I sounds like (from the comments above) you have a choice between two solid groups of people. Have fun!
