Re: Steven segal
On limewire I found a good movie called "The Path Beyond Thought," and it was very in depth and detailed about what aikido was.

Re: Steven segal
You have downloaded all of it?
I know there are clips out there of I think the last sequence in the movie in which a lot of aikido has been cut together, but all of it? Talk about violating copywrite (not so much you who download, although I don't approve of that either, but that someone has bought or got the movie and now are spreading it around the web....)

Re: Steven segal
I must admit that I have downloaded the entire clip as well (some 30-40 min). Ok watching, but not too interesting.
There are much more interesting movies you can find on dc connect, though.
There's an instructional video with tohei sensei from around the 1960's, and one of the Osensei documentaries, as well as numerous demonstration clips by various sensei's (I've got Nishio sensei, Saito sensei as wel as Shioda sensei and some others).
Quite a lot of worthvile(sp?) material.
With regards to copyright I don't feel morally bad considering a) I would never have found out about these movies without dc
b) I wouldn't have bought them even if I knew about them, being a poor student with no tv, wich means that the companies have not lost a potential sale
and
c) I feel that the copyright idea is in need of some kind of revision, and me downloading things puts pressure on the powers that be to find such a revision.
If anyone wants to download the clips, just mail me, and I can meet up with you on a dc hub, over icq or in some other manner.

hmph, seems like you (generic) can justify just about anything...regardless of whether its moral or not...

I take it that you disagree with my standpoint?
In that case, why not try and give some argumrnts instead of just racking down on me?

Re: Steven segal
I specifically stated "you (generic)" so that you wouldn't take it personally.
I've made my arguement...it seems as if *someone* could always justify just about anything, regardless of whether the action in question is moral or not. I fail to see how that arguement is not clear. The two problems I see with it is that it sets a very high standard (I certainly don't meet it all the time), and that it could lead to paralysis...someone could spend so many cylces debating any action as to render any action moot.
If you would like my own personal arguement as to copyright law...well...lets see...
I spend years training myself to be a carpenter, and I come up with a nifty design for a new chair, and spend more years perfecting it, and I build this really neat chair (takes me 4 months) and set it in my back yard. Someone sees it, and decides that because it is made of wood (which grows naturally) and because anyone can really make a chair (its not such a novel idea) and because they really need a chair themselves (and they are poor and can't buy it), that they will just walk into my backyard and take it. They have justified their action...but was their action moral?
Take one more step...Instead of taking the chair, they make a detailed sketch of my chair, and inspite of the fact that I make my living producing new and innovative furniture, they start their own factory making that exact chair, perhaps even mass producing it. Are they justified in taking away the market for my chair?
This last step is no longer as clear cut to some...to others there is not that much difference. I would suggest that the original maker of the chair is likely to be quite miffed.
Best,
Ron

Re: Steven segal
Re: Ron
Thanks for your reply. I wassn't terribly upset by your post, and it is true. There always _does_ seem to be a way to motivate a specific action, regardless of which action it is. It is quite interesting, and makes me wonder why I keep starting discussions about one thing or another :-).
With regards to copyright: The difficulty with the second argument is that someone copying and manufacturing your chair for free gives a lot more people access to a good chair, thus increasing the "common good". Now, I realise that this begs the question of who will design new chairs, and that one needs to be solved. But I don't agree that it is a bad thing for the entire world to have free access to nice chairs (or good music, or nice aikido videos).

Re: Steven segal
Hi Alfredo!
"dc" is the name of one of the more popular p2p file sharing protocols.
A program to use for this would be
http://dcplusplus.sourceforge.net/
You then download one of the public "hub" lists inside the program, and connect to a hub where you satisfy the conditions (you need to share a certain amount of data, between 2 and 50 gb).
Alternatively, if you have a moderatly fast connection, you could add me on icq (number 40540054)
Lycka till!
/Gustaf

Re: Steven segal
Just a note on the copyright idea. Most of the people involved with putting out video in Aikido do not have a lot of money. By copying what they sell, one is depriving them of the ability to put out more. For example, a lot of the good stuff is produced by Aikido Journal. If you look at Stan Pranin`s (the owner) various editorials, one can easily see that he is not rich. Also, he has a family which he is trying to support. If it gets too tough, I am sure that he will just quit, depriving us with a lot of great resources. Steven Seagal may be rich (although looking at his recent movies, ?), but (for example) I am sure that the Nishio family isn`t. Why not support them and buy the videos?

Re: Steven segal
TD-
If you dont have it already, check this link:
http://www.met.rdg.ac.uk/~sws99dsc/r.../SS_Aikido.mpg
I found it by going to yahoo, clicking on the "video" tab above the search bar and typed in "aikido". This is the first one that came up. There may be more.
Though I am not knowledgeable enough to critique this video intelligently, I do think it is pretty cool.

Re: Steven segal
Why is this bad Craig? Should he for the purpos of satisfying the future opinion of Mr. Craig Hooker have thought of using larger ukes (which would be a feat of itself consider his length)?
BTW how is it more repetitive than the general clip of aikido? In this case there are not all that much video footage of SS from pre-90's so I guess the director of said clip just wanted to show as much of him as possible. If you want more I guess you have to buy the movie, right?

Re: Steven segal-birthday greets
To friends and supporteres of Segal Sensai, Today -4-10-2005 is his birthday, which date I also share with Sensai.
Happy Birthday Sensai, may the road raise with you, and may the wind be at your back. And may you die and be in heaven half an hour befor the devil knows you're gone.
You have detracters and supporters, bottom line is that you have made aikido much more a real thing than the stuff of ledgend.
