Daito Ryu Weapons
Anyone know what, if any, kind of weapons the guys in Daito Ryu use? I'm curius to know if they use the war fan, since a lot of the stories about Takeda always mention that he carried one. I interested in learning how to use that paticular weapon thats why I bring it up.

Re: Daito Ryu Weapons
Quick search suggests that there are many weapons used in Daito-ryu, including the war fan. I'm not sure how well daito-ryu is represented by modern martial arts though - i.e. whether to a large extent in some clubs it has been reconstructed from it's derivatives (aikido, hapkido etc).

I am curious as to why you might think that some of the Daito Ryu we see around might be reconstructed rather than directly handed down? There has been no break in the succession of Daito Ryu. There are a number of people who have been teaching for many years who were direct students of Takeda Sokaku, including his son. Those teachers created a larger group of formaly trained instructor level teachers who are spreading Daito Ryu around the world. I have encountered Kondo Sensei twice myself at the Aiki Expo and I know he is overseeing the practice of folks training in various places around the states.
It would seem to me that we are really talking about the difference between the folks who are really doing Daito Ryu under a legitimate teacher and those who are bogus, trying to make up some Daito Ryu-like content that would only fool a group of beginners who wouldn't know any better.

Re: Daito Ryu Weapons
Hi George,
There's an awfull lot of the made up guys around, and they muddy the waters quite a bit. The website listed is a group of students and teachers from the mainline branch, but there is a bit of controversey about them too...
It is hard for a beginner to get a good clue when there are instructors claiming to teach Daito ryu which is warmed over karate, kung fu, chi na, jujutsu, etc. Its a shame really...

Re: Daito Ryu Weapons
Thanks for the info, Peter. Unfortunately it looks like most of the those older styles are only taught by qualified teachers in Japan. I do not see me being able to make it there anytime soon. If anyone knows about any dojos in the states could you clue me in?

Re: Daito Ryu Weapons
If you look carefully at e-budo, you will find that there is koryu available in the US for those who extend themselves.
