Warping

Anybody have any ideas how to correct warping of weapons? Ive had a Jo for about three years, its my favourite Jo (I have two others) left it outside whilst I went on holiday (stupid I know!) now its wapred at one end and does not lie flat on the floor. Also its weired training with a warped Jo, I can really feel it when practicing suburi. Any help would be great thank you

keep in mind this is based on their appalachian hickory weapons and not all types of wood bend like that.

Re: Warping

I've never heard of un-warping a white oak jo, but maybe it can be done. The Kingfisher site has great advice on avoiding warping in the first place. In addition to what they say, I have been advised not to store a jo in an upright position or on those two-points-of-contact weapons racks that are so popular. My jo lie flat on the floor whenever I'm not using them. The one jo that I foolishly left leaning against the wall in a corner warped -- another one that I have never stored improperly is still straight as a ruler after 15 years.

Re: Warping

Reverse the process. Build a straight jig, with extra support around the warped point, force the wood into the jig, and steam it for a while. Repeat as necessary, the wood will partially relax back into the warp a few times.
I used that method to put a warp/sori into a homemade bokken, worked a treat. Didn't want to cut across any appreciable amount of grain.

Re: Warping

Well Ive tried a variation on the method Jason posted, I stuck one end of the Jo in between two upright branches of a ewe tree I have growing in my back garden, and stuck the other end in another ewe tree growing about 2 feet beside it, I bent the Jo so it had a good arc, 24 hrs later hey presto my Jo is straight!!!! thank you Jason and everyone who has given some good advice. I wont be leaving it outside again ;-)
