Music & Meditation & Aikido
What sort of music do you listen too on a day-to-day basis and does listening to music help you relax/meditate or does it make you more energetic?
Personally, I think listening to a good tune helps me relax very well, although sometimes the chosen music might not seem relaxing. Depends on what I'm doing. If I'm coding away, it can be anything from Classical to Coal Chamber.. and all inbetween.
When I want to relax, or really get into a 'zone', it's often a good 15 minute rendition of "Divided Sky" by Phish, but that's just me.
I tend to find myself thinking about Aikido techniques in the bank of my mind, remembering what we learned in class, and overall, I feel good when I combine music and Aikido.
What do other people do? What do you guys do?

Anything and everything, but my main musical emphasis is on good song music with a definate emphasis on the lyrics being meaningful and important. check out
www.greyeyeglances.com for what I'm talking about. Best band EVER.

Every Aikido student should be issued a banjo upon enrollment. When played right it is wonderful music of America and Africa when played wrong it sounds like Japanese music and when one is in need it can be a used as a benjo.

Oh my, you're right. I should get a banjo.
I've actually not played music in a long time. I've got less and less time it seems, than I did this time 2 years ago. (I play Bass, but "play" is probably the wrong word)
Lyrics are good, but when I'm in a zone, or thinking about Aikido techniques/theory, I find lyrics distracting. It's the repetitive and trippy music that sometimes works for me. It's the repetitive and trippy music that sometimes works for me.

Would you believe "Linkin Park"?
I practice breathing (kokyu-ho) and focusing one point when I "sing-a-long".

Thalib:
Hooker Sensei is right. Forget Linkin Park and go listen to "Dueling Banjos"...preferably while watching "Deliverance." Should get you ready for that shodan exam...

I'm a father of two girls age 1½ and 3, so the only thing I listen to at home is kids-music . However once a week I play 70's, 80's and 90's pop, soul and rock with some friends in a band and that really helps me relax in much the same way as Aikido.

Actually I missed the pun with Hooker-san...
Nice play on words with banjo and benjo (means toilet in Japanese)...
And Kuo-san... mixing "duelling banjo" and "deliverance" could be quite lethal... but I'm prepared to try new things...

I often listen to old live Phish tapes, but you're right, that album is good stuff, "Mental Jewellery".
Duelling what? Hrm.. I'll have to try that one.. on wait, you meant banjo.
Never seen Deliverance, should I go rent it? What's it about.. ?

Duelling Benjo's? I thought that was Kenshin Uesugi's province.

Hi there !
Back online with a new pc - great !
Music for meditation is one thing -
I'm a little on the trippy side.
But this happens quite often :
Someone is teaching me,knowing that I play music,so I'll get suggestions like :
try to think like you're playing in lydian-mode , try more like waltz !!
All ment with good intention but !
When I'm in the mood for playing I want to play some kick-ass guitar and when I feel like
that I am so un-AiKi as can be,hysterical and very animated and touchy as hell, and when I'm pissed off I play my best, that really makes my s... come out totally together.
Maybe one day this thing will come together
in a AiKi-way but there has been very little sign of it yet !
Thank God for rock'n'roll and keiko.
yours Chr.B.

Once place I've hung out at had music running during class. The music generally tended towards stuff with a rhythm that fit with Aikido. The right song, at the right time, can add a lot to the practice.

dont have any particular music that i relate to aikido, nor do we listen to music in our dojo (unless we are having a party that is)
but i do play the didgeridoo (not as much now as i used to). having mastered circular breathing, this instrument is amazing for building ki and for meditation.
it's incredible that a hollow piece of wood can teach you how to breathe correctly.

I listen to a great variety of things, from classical to celtic, from country to rock.
But I listen to my daughter play (she's a flautist) and there's probably not much tht could be more relaxing.
Peace.

I agree with Greg Gross on the best music.
Grey Eye Glances is the way to go!
Check out the song "Keep On" on the CD "A Little Voodoo"
