Re: Poll: Is comparing aikido with other martial arts worthwhile to you?
I said it was worthwhile to me. I gain an insight into some of the relative qualities like approach and mind-set...I also get to practice critical thinking and communication skills, both integral to any serious martial artist or socialy-minded individual.
I think it's generally pointless to make better-than & worse-than comparisons. In my opinion, the major methods of training, when looked at on the whole, are essentially equal. The better/worse qualities exist primarily on the individual level of training; not the vast compass of most styles...particularly when different styles often have differing goals to begin with.

IMHO, cross training is worthwhile.
Comparing isn't.

Yes, not to compare for better or worse but to find out how one martial art compliments another to make for a better martial artist.

Re: Poll: Is comparing aikido with other martial arts worthwhile to you?
It was important (at first) for me to compare what I was learning with "other arts". Then I started to understand the principles - I saw it in the other arts - I saw it in other things.
I compared it a few times to "other arts" people, who just don't get it.
I'm done comparing - I just accept it, and want to learn more of it.

Sometimes we get lucky and find what we are looking for on the first try, and then we don't compare, we just look and say, "That is that, this is this."

Re: Poll: Is comparing aikido with other martial arts worthwhile to you?
When you have limited time, limited amount of money and want to do martial art.... then comparing it is essential, just like trying to buy a piece of real estate. It will be a huge investment (in aikido, it will be a huge investment in time), you need to compare and select the most appropriate. Again, knowing what you really want out of it is very important.
Boon.

What he said.
I said no. Comparing is pointless.

I said "No"
Identification is generally more useful to me than comparison.
