Does your Aikido come with sound effects?

Ok, now is it just me, but resently I have been noticeing myself doing wooshing sounds everytime I do either Tenchi nage or Kokyu Nage.

Is this just a phase, or should I get some professional help? lol

Freaky! You definitely need help...

Just kidding.

I don't make those kinds of sounds but I do tend to "exhale loudly" when taking hard ukemi. I wouldn't worry about it too much. If someone gives you any grief about it, just give them an extra "crank o' the wrist".

"Ooooooooshhhhccscchhhhhh!" is becoming a popular one of mine..

Followed by "Ih!!" as I hit the ground for my rolls, I've not yet got the hang of this breathing lark

I find that whilst doing udekiminage or kotegaeshi, sound effects such as, oof! phwat! Kabam! eminate from my uke!

Although my problem is most definately terminal, there was this guy in my Shotokan club, who when he Kiai'd he said "TART!!!" Which I thought was fairly amusing.

Some times during randori I'll make sound effects.

heheheh. Normally when I am told I have to kiai, as opposed to just making (ab)normal noises, I resort to the old NY standby of raising a hand in the air and yelling "Taxi!"

Gets uke's balance every time (esp if he was grabbing the wrist....)....

I dun really know yet. I need to watch myself next time I practice... Although, whenever I land I tend to say "oi" or "ow," specially when put in a pin. My Sensei can really twist that wrist and one of my training partners, David, has a tendancy to throw rather hard instead of merely letting them fall. Oh, "oof" is another common one.

My head hurts...

While I do some audible exhalations when taking a big fall I tend to more so when doing technique. For me it makes sure that I am breathing with the movement (kokyu) and improving my technique. Of course a good old kiai is always fun to distract every uke in the dojo on occassion.

Talking soundeffects...

Various dutch profanity here ...I actually picked that up from my sensei...no honestly, I did

My ukemi, any kind, comes with a nice, clean, "umph" fun thread...

Dennis, does this mean you make a groaning noise as you lower yourself into a chair? (This is known as the old-man-groan in my work place - a true test of age)

I tend to make "oof" noises as I land, particularly if Tori (Nage) still has a hold of my wrist or arm.

"oof" can be prefixed with a squeal if the technique applied was a wrist lock of some variety.

Speaking of variety, and on the subject of noises in martial arts, has anyone else noticed how individual a persons kiai is?

I'm thinking of leaving a message on my answer phone that says "Please Kiai after the tone" as this pretty much cuts to the chase.

Happy Training!

Matt

I'm 36, woefully out of shape and I started aikido 5 months ago. I'm training in aikikai at the Kurihama Aikido Club in Yokosuka, Japan four or five times a week. EVERYTHING I do results in my groaning nowadays...

Confused Whoosh! Thud! Crack!

Aside from a lot of groaning in the dojo I train at (the most predominant sound effect), I do hear the occasional "wooshing" sound from the mouths of some guys as they execute techniques. *shrugs* Granted, it's not the most dignified thing, but perhaps it helps technique to visualize that you're "wooshing" like the wind, or water? "Be like water, my friend..."

Post sounds?

What a funny post you have here guys, the level is like to be in a bar drinking beer having a burp-jitsu contest.

Just kidding..

Seriously:

The only time I attended a seminar where the instructor teached types of sounds and what are they were intended for was in Maracaibo, Venezuela under Honorable Shihan Wagner Bull from Brasil. If I understood well he were studyng kotodama as he let us know in Aikido Journal forum months a go.

Maybe somebody wish to drop him an e-mail and kindly invite him to participate

When starting the technique "Ap" (sometimes), when doing some kind of Kokyu "ei" (sometimes) and sometimes when Sensei is making me a lock "aaaaHHHHHHHHH or UUUU" (well of course just in my mind hehehe )

Freaky!

Im quite well known for making Star Wars noises when im being thrown!...you know the odd 'vummmmmm' or 'phummmmm' light saber noise! Dunno why I do it I just do!

Oh and thw occasional ' wheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee! ' Honest!

When doing technique I dont really make a lot of noise but I do try and breath properly which can sometimes make a noise when im exhaling......I tend to make more noise when im tired and being thrown or doing technique...like in a randori after a hard training session!

Anyone else the same?

Chris

you used to sound like a tie fighter when you were doing technique. You've quietened down recently though Chris.

a couple of training sessions ago I did technique and sounded like 'the fonze'.

"Ey!"

I was at a seminar a few months ago, held by Paolo Corallini shihan and Ulf Evenås shihan. At that seminar (which was great) there was a guy from Denmark. We practised a form of morote dori kokyo, where uke would hold Nages arm real tight. Nage was supposed to check that the grip was good and then do the throw the way Corallini sensei showed.

Anyway, this Danish guy went "apa apa apa" when testing my grip (wiggling his arm from side to side) and then he went "aaaaaboooouuuu" when he threw me. It was amusing. And he was very good at the technique. Maybe it was this magical chant, that made his technique so powerful?

The sound I make when acting as uke is usually something along the lines of: "mommy..."

Answers are only easy when they're incomplete.
