Question weird Antemi ( hitting and the such)

Yesterday at Aikido ( where else?) I was doing randori with a bigger man. sensei told uke to attack me however he pleases so I being shite/tori throw the man around he attack with punches, shomenuchi and other attacks quite fast and with intent. Sensei tells me to hit uke... im like you mean antemi ( how do you spell it?? so uke attacks me even harder. he gets me in a headlock, I just lower my center and well, reach to grab him balls ( to put it bluntly :^) ) my sensie shakes his head apporving.. I said sorry ( to my uke) after class for the sudden invasion of privacy and he said it was okay becuase it worked and the such. I was wondering would have this been acceptable at dojos other dojos? ( i was in adults class doing that in kids class never!) have you ever done this kind of weird stuff?? or any stories like that?? just wondering...

Not weird at all. I've seen atemi with a kiss, a grab to the balls, sucking up a big loud wad of spit, hitting yourself before the attacker does, popping the hakama as the attack come in, kicks, and a bunch more I'm not thinking of. Very cool stuff in my opinion.

I don't know for sure if it's true but there's a story about one of my styles shihan (now late).

Apparently a guy came to his dojo with a pair of nunchaku. The guy wanted to see if the shihan could get through his nunchaku and throw him. The guy starts all this spinning and whirling of the weapon, the shihan watches for a few seconds then spits a big fat loogey in the guys face. The guy stops in disgust and the shihan calmly walks in and gently puts him on the ground.

Like I said, I don't know if it's true but it wouldn't surprise me coming from this particluar shihan...he was a lot of fun

I just went to a Latvian seminar where the sensei used to do a hanmi-handachi waza kokyo-nage where he just lifted the uke by plainly... uhm... hitting them to the nuts. Quite unpleasant but very working that was. I've seen another sensei just blowing to the face of the uke. He said spitting would be more efficient but he won't do that in the dojo

Very efficient atemy by the UKE btw is when koshinage is done on you and you grab a pack of chest hair instead of gi. Accidentally or not

Countering a headlock by a groin grab is a fine self defense technique but IMO it is not something you want to do in an aikido dojo.

This is becuase it is such a potentialy damaging technique, and an unnecessary one as there are other counters to headlocks that are not so potentially dangerous.

One of the great things about aikido is that you can practice it with full intent and not hurt anybody. Violating this rule destroys the aikido dojo. Simple self defense tactics are effective and have their place. There must be an agreed upon limit, and I think attacks to the genitals go beyond that. Please keep in mind that I would consider a punch (with reasonable force) to the face to be acceptable.

If I put someone in a headlock, and they grabbed my testicles, I would consider this a great offense and may be required by my own sensibilites/reflexes to retaliate. I did not start my aikido training to fall back to brawling, but I am not so forgiving as to let such a potentially damaging attack go unchecked. Do unto to others....

Stumbled across this for another thread and thought it was nicely written.

Terry's "technique" was to harmonize so as to disrupt. Traditional aikido involves harmonious movement that allows the uke to fall gracefully. Yin and yang, throughout the movement. Not so with Terry - drooling, picking your nose, stepping on uke's foot, grabbing the balls (if present), grabbing a ponytail, flicking the hakama, jumping down, uttering "your mother!" were all part of aikido if they worked. Movement could be stopped and disrupted. It didn't always look beautiful.
