Colds and Aikido

Hi folks,

Just a reminder, now that we're in the midst of the cold season (at least up here in the northern hemisphere...).

If you feel like you are coming down with a cold or are already suffering from one, please stay off the mat!

Also, I'd recommend people wash their hands after training, whether they think they've trained with someone who has a cold. I remember one shihan at Aikikai hombu dojo tell me to be sure to gargle after each class, too.

This has been a public service announcement...

Great advise Jun; and one that I preach at my dojo as well.

I know someone who is actually wearing a mask because he doesn't want to infect anyone.

Probably inneffective; if he's that contagious he is carrying droplets on his hands, clothes, etc. so on, say, public transit, a mask might help, but in a m.a. with touching others, not so.

I don't know if he's that contagious. He said he was getting over a cold. I haven't seen him sneezing or coughing.

Hehe, "cold" weather reached Sweden this week. Think we've had 5-6 days with a few inches of wet snow totally throughout the whole winter.
Good point though, nothing funny about contageous diseases like the common cold.

Given that is the advice - which I agree with - it follows to also please not atend class if you just had a live vaccine shot and are still shedding it. The Flu mist specifically comes to mind for adults...

Washing your hands before class will help as well.

Re: Colds and Aikido

Yeah tell me about cold season. I spent all week looking out to my girlfriend who was really sick with the flu and then on Friday night we had a party after class and of course, I got sick and couldn't go. I mean, I could have went I suppose but it would have been selfish for me to go and risk giving the flu to everyone else in class.

Actually, I'd advice to wash hands and face after every class, since you find your hands and your face on the mat many times during class, and that's where everyones feet are too... and (sadly) not everyone keeps them hygene...

Grr! Re: Colds and Aikido

I just ditched class today because of a cold (the crud). I caught from my wife who caught it from a typhoid Marie at work. Work has one of those attendance policies where if you are out you get a demerit so people come in and share all the time. I am contagious at the moment and cannot wait to get better and go back. I just had some time off because of a broken toe. If it isn't one thing it is another.
