Perhaps he was seeking a psychological advantage, but it looks like he couldn't get too deep into the winner's mind. It reminds me of the scene in Raiders of the Lost Ark when the guy shows off his sword skills and Jones just shoots him. Thanks for the clip.

I still thought the idea- of not showing off- was a good one.
