Mounting a Gi in a shadow box
This might seem like a bit of an odd question, but does anyone have any suggestions on how one could mount a gi in a shadow box, kind of like how people mount team jerseys?
Background: The gi that I practiced in for the first 6 years became too threadbare to rescue, so I stopped wearing it. Being a bit sentimental, I couldn't quite bear to part with it or turn it in to rags. After all, it had traveled with me to a lot of seminars, and even came to Japan with me back in 2012. Anyway, a friend suggested mounting it in a shadow box, with some photos and things that represented my Aikido journey during those first years.
I've got the shadow box, and printed some photos. I've even got a furoshiki from Iwata with that will be in the top-left corner. The only stumbling block is, I haven't got the first clue how to make it stay put against the backing of the shadow box.

Try talking to a frame shop?
You probably need some kind of hook. Because of the weight, the techniques used to hang paper items probably won't work.

Re: Mounting a Gi in a shadow box
I sew a lot and paint a lot and have done a lot of "constructions" - mixed media 3D pieces using medicine cabinets or plywood or shadow boxes as a starting point.
I don't know what the backing structure of your shadow box is, but if it is not VERY sturdy you may need to replace it with a piece of Masonite or thin plywood or other substantial rigid thing the same size as the backing structure.
If you can attach good foamcore to the backing, you may be able to use a lot of sturdy, tiny-headed steel pins from a sewing shop to carefully affix the gi to the foamcore.
I tend, when making constructions, to use Liquitex acrylic"gel medium and varnish" as my basic go-to adhesive; it will work with fabric HOWEVER it can easily soak through and dry with some visibility AND it is going to affix the gi permanently exactly how you have folded it, so you probably don't want to try this!

Re: Mounting a Gi in a shadow box
I mounted an autographed sportcoat in a shadowbox a few years ago, and I used common thumbtacks through the back in strategic locations, into a 1/4" luan paneling backing. I also used a couple of velcro "dots" in out-of-sight areas to keep folds and creases in place.

Re: Mounting a Gi in a shadow box
Thanks for the feedback everyone! I really appreciate it, and it'll definitely help.
I took a look at the backing last night, and it's thin (I'm guessing 1/8" or 5/16") plywood, with another layer on top. The 2nd layer is covered with a felt-like material, so I'm guessing it may be foamcore or something similar.
When it's done, I'll post my notes and a picture

Re: Mounting a Gi in a shadow box
Hi Matthew,
So when it is done successfully, will you and your students bow to this Gi before and after practice?

Re: Mounting a Gi in a shadow box
I have always advocated cross training. Shadow boxing will make a nice addition to your repertoire.

Velcro dots is a great idea for "finishing" touches! I'd probably go for tiny-headed sewers pins as they offer strength with narrower shaft, longer shaft, better point, as opposed to thumbtacks.

*LOL* Nope, it's going in the house as an art/conversation piece. Also, I don't have any students

Thanks for the suggestion! Keeping the sleeves in place will probably require sewers pins.

Re: Mounting a Gi in a shadow box
Well, I finally managed to make the time to get this project finished up. I used plain old craft glue to stick on the furoshiki, fabric, and photos. A couple of very small nails, along with some hot glue, are holding the gi in place, and hot glue was used on the heart. I'm rather pleased with the result!

Re: Mounting a Gi in a shadow box
It looks very nicely made. Before I read this thread, I was not aware of the concept of shadow boxes at all. It was interesting to follow it. Thank you for sharing the result of the project.
