Rare Footage Of UK AIkido Pioneer Sensei Kenneth Williams

Here is a great chance to see a video of parts of a course with Sensei Kenneth Williams, pioneer of AIkido in the UK and founder of the Ki Federation of Great Britain.

The organisation I am part of was founded by one of his top students Sensei William Andrew (also seen in this video).

I did not film this video or own it in any way. It has been shared on Youtube and I thought there may be many people here that would like to see it.

He would like to know where is nowadays.

Thanks in advance.

Re: Rare Footage Of UK AIkido Pioneer Sensei Kenneth Williams

I understand that Williams Sensei is still till teaching with his ` Ki Federation GB ` he is aged about 84 yrs now. I was assistant to Williams Sensei from 1957 to 1966 until the arrival of Chiba Sensei, I joined with Chiba Sensei in 1967. Williams Sensei had a brother David who went to Australia and taught Aiki Budo - I think that was in Melbourne Aus ?? ( he is not the David Williams 10th dan Ki ) I was wondering if David Williams was still active ??

Re: Rare Footage Of UK AIkido Pioneer Sensei Kenneth Williams

Can anyone familiar describe more about what is happening around the 30 minute mark, where Williams Sensei does technique and has a second person come up and push on him?

He is being tested for co-ordination, balance, centredness. A common part of the Ki Aikido style is these "Ki Tests", created by Koichi Tohei as exercises often for the teacher or a higher grade to test a student's level of development by testing their level of relaxation and co-ordination before, during and after a technique. It is a test of the mind and body.

Sensei,

Thank you for your contribution. I am well aware of the large part you played in spreading Aikido in the UK and it is an honour that you would contribute to the post and a reflection of your commitment in spreading light and knowledge on the history of Aikido.

Thank you,

Ronnie Smith

Re: Rare Footage Of UK AIkido Pioneer Sensei Kenneth Williams

One of the only videos I can find of him. He was my teacher in the 80s and 90s, and he was a charismatic man and brilliant instructor. Now that I have started practising again, his words come flooding back to me. Likewise, he used to tell us that the words of his teacher, Kenshiro Abbe, still came to him, words that he may not have understood when they were uttered. The big strapping uke you see was Paul MecKechan, his assistant of 10 years. Their flow together was a marvel to experience.

Best regards,
Gerald
