Need

Hi.

I need a little help from someone who knows Aikido--is the word "Aikidoka?--and who likes sci fi. A fellow trekker would be even better. I trained for a few months one summer, and took a term of Aikido as a PE class years ago, which means that I know just enough to know that I know nothing about it. But I have a two-page Aikido bout in a Sci fi novel I'm working on, and I would greatly appreciate someone's help making it sound realistic. I'll try to watch this space--I'm new to your web site, too--and will email a copy to anyone who'd like to see it. Or post those two pages here, if that's ok?

Thanx!

Jonno

Re: Need

Look out for a novel called "Aiki" by John Gilbert.

Aiki and SciFi!

Whether it is any good is up to you, and, yes, I have read it.

Re: Need

As a writer (and fantasy and some sci-fi reader), I think that 2-page fight scenes should generally be trimmed by about 75%. Most fight scenes do little to advance the plot or develop character. Even though I'm interested in martial arts, I often skim through fight scenes.

Re: Need

Jonno,

If you want to e-mail something to me I'll be happy to read it and give you my take on it. Another book that mixes sci-fi and Aikido is "Anvil of the Heart" by Bruce T. Holmes. Most of the Aikido stuff in it though is fairly straightforward.

I'm not sure if you are looking for blending with tentacles, etc. but it sounds interesting anyway.

Harmony does not mean that there are no conflicts,
for the dynamic spiral of existence embraces both extremes.

Re: Need

Me, too, I wanna read it.
Check out the "Dancers" series by Elizabeth Lynn, Sensei. Kinda dated but the aiki isn't.

And if its aikido, how long can the fight scene realistically be?
