Oh, how it hurts!

I went back to training on Thursday, after two years out. I can feel muscles aching that i'd forgotten i had. Any advice on getting the pain to go away? I know, training again on Tuesday will loosen me up again, as it did when i first started. But for now, i hurt.

I've been told the pain never goes away, you just get so used to it you forget it's there. They were a first dan's wisdom, i just wish i could remember which first dan.

Re: Oh, how it hurts!

Your body will get used to it. In the meantime, ibuprofen for the inside, dit da jow for the outside. (Dit da jow is a an herbal liniment that you can usually get in a Chinese market or apothecary.)

Re: Oh, how it hurts!

Skip the ibuprofen. It'll take the pain away but it will make it harder for your body to recover. Take a hot bath or shower instead, go to the sauna if you have one available, drink plenty, have some rest.

Re: Oh, how it hurts!

I was going to say "light exercise" might help, too...

Uh, Vicodin?

To speak ill of anything is against the nature of Aikido

Take a light walk, eat well and sleep a lot.

Light excercise with good food and rest does wonders to the muscles.

Soak in the hottest water you can stand for twenty minutes, add some muscle relaxtant to the water. There are some Aromatherapeutics out there that do work wonders!

Re: Oh, how it hurts!

The pain does go away once you knock the rust off, and keep it off. And Ibuprofren is not just a pain-killer, it is an anti-inflammatory, and therefore theurapeutic for the occasion of sore muscles. You probably won't need it once you've gotten back into shape.

Proper warmups are a must, if you can, see what getting on the mat 10 minutes early for a number of loose rolls can do to get the blood going, and the sinews opened up.

Ice is good on the knees, or any other joint, and can be alternated with heat (hot shower, bath) for the muscles.

The trick is keeping the rust off.

As the Doka says: "Polish It Ceaselessly!"

Re: Oh, how it hurts!

Stay relaxed. You cannot do all the techniques and ukemi as you did two years ago. Dont try to force it. If the technique does not work just ask your partner to help you until all the reflexes are working well.

Yet some muscles have to develop again so some pain might be still there for the next weeks. In about one month or two, you will be fine again (I was and the break was somewhat longer).

Cheers Dirk
