Re: YouTube: 50 Different Aikido Ukemi Drills in 7 Minutes

Hi Jun,
It looks like good, smooth ukemi by lightly built and flexible people and I am sure they are good for building
a friendly and lasting relationship with the mat but a few of them are a bit dangerous I think..
Especially practice #35 and #38 to #43..
Personally I always bump my upper back shoulder region trying to do those drills and I feel it is very hard to maintain a rounded structure when you're thrown (or dropped) in a vertical manner as opposed to being projected outwards allowing you to take a smooth fall by escaping the technique at your own descretion.
It may be that Iīm not in my prime anymore which doesnīt help off course, but on the other hand I have watched quite a few proficient ukeīs doing these types of falls and to me it seems that most of the time these falls (#38 to #43) creates a dead spot where no actual rolling is taking place.. creating an impact zone right on the back of the shoulder or the upper spine area.. thatīs not good I think. So apart from looking cool, they might instill a false sense of security depending on the actual application..?
Cheers,
Lars
