Our Favorite Teachers

I got a card from one of my favorite budo teachers in Japan earlier this year, and I've been thinking about him a lot recently. The result is that I wrote this blog about him. How he treated me and and how other students around him responded to him.

Who are some of your favorite teachers, and why? Is there an anecdote about them that displays some of what makes them wonderful to you?

Re: Our Favorite Teachers

Peter, right on the money. I find that as the years go by, the people I learn the best from are the ones that challenge me and make me ask if my techniques really work. Luckily my teaches call me out if I don't perform up to expectations!

Re: Our Favorite Teachers

Though I never actually met him in person, I loved the teachings and writings of the late Rev. Kensho Furuya Sensei of ACLA. Both his videos (Art of Aikido), book (Kodo: Ancient Ways) and posts from his old Yahoo group have always been among my favorite. A veritable walking encyclopedia of all things Aikido and Japanese Sword related. A true warrior-scholar. I've also loved any and all experiences I've had with Hiroshi Ikeda Sensei (ASU). He has wonderful technique and an even more wonderful personality and teaching style.
