Your Aikido Practice in 2015?

Hi everyone,

Happy new year! I hope 2015 is a joyously memorable year for you and yours, and I hope your aikido training continues to bring each of you much happiness and wonder.

What are you looking forward to in your aikido practice this year?

Re: Your Aikido Practice in 2015?

Hi Jun! Happy New Year to you and everyone on AikiWeb.

I am looking forward to lots of "just training," and (I hope) refining my technique, deepening my understanding of the art, and applying Aikido more in my life. Also, expanding my practice through regular meditation - I used to do that, and I miss it. There are several seminars I'm looking forward to, including my 6th year participating in the Bridge Seminar in San Diego in January, and a new 4-day Evolutionary Aikido Retreat our dojo is offering at Joshua Tree in February. There are five more events I really want to get to, but we'll see how that works out. Writing is a huge priority this year. I'm planning two books for beginning Aikido students, plus a more personal look at my own experience of training, through sho-dan. Finally, inspired by my Aikido practice, I will be coaching others in finding active pursuits they love, that will support them to achieving better health and happiness. And a whole lot of chopping wood and carrying water.

Just training. It has always been more than sufficient and keeps getting better every year. Also hoping to help increase our dojo's membership, go to Birankai Summer Camp and fulfill my resolution to drag along another dojo member who hasn't been before.

Re: Your Aikido Practice in 2015?

Let's see.... I hope to get my one older nidan student back on the mat and moving and grooving after he has his second knee replacement, and possibly a partial hip replacement on the same side (not at the same time, that wouldn't be good) - hopefully in time to demo for sandan by end-year 2015. Also working through a couple of my beginner to intermediate students who have quite serious falling fear hindering their openness to simply receiving ukemi. Not a previous injury thing, a sort of mind-based pathos/phobia thing, body going rigid, all the wrong autonomic responses, e.g. stiff arms, head going back rather than chin tucking, etc. Only happens when... they don't expect the fall(oops in open randori, huh).... so it's a big deal. Dojo development, get another groupon out there (don't laugh, we got a couple pairs of couples (how's that for layered redundancy, eh? But, you know what I mean, don't ya!) to do some more new student finding, as per usual, the washout ratio being what it is. The usual cool stuff for my own training. Been working on light touch, 1-hand structural destruction, neat stuff. Like that.

I find it interesting that the kanji character for kuzushi illustrates a mountain falling on a house.

Re: Your Aikido Practice in 2015?

Hello Jun,

Happy New Year to you and all the other members.

For me, 2015 marks the completion of 45 years of aikido. So, of course, I expect to go on to complete a half-century, with 40 of these years spent training in Hiroshima. Last year, much of my time was taken up with non-aikido matters and I have not had much time to devote to writing. So, I need to go back to work on my Transmission, Inheritance and Emulation columns, since I have only reached the halfway stage.

Best wishes,

PAG

Happy New Year, all!
In no particular order....completing my 19th year of training by finally ranking for shodan (some of us are slow learners...)....learning to "do more with less" :-) ....offering more Surviving Falls classes and supporting others who wish to provide these classes...

Finding a balance between training and minding my 10 week old baby! Would also like to focus more on jujitsu and judo this year than I did last year.

Re: Your Aikido Practice in 2015?

This year I'm planning on more of what made my practice in 2014 great: A combination of regular training with wonderful people plus a good dose of "Youtube research" to help fine-tune my techniques. To that I hope to add some internal training in Hawaii and visit Peter Goldsbury in Hiroshima at some point.

I made a promise to myself I would train every weapon technique at least once a week. I'm embarrassed when I have to relearn something due to not practicing it enough and I feel its a responsibility of mine to always have that at my fingertips if asked by a junior ranking student trying to learn. So I suppose that could be a 2015 goal.

Thank you,Jun, and a good year to you, too!
What to do in terms of Aikido in the New Year?
Apply what i train and teach on the mat in my own daily life even better: Be non-judgmental, gentle yet firm with the people around me and less abusive to myself.
