Double Randori

Hi all (TGIF),

Thought I'd share an interesting experience with you from our morning class today.
At the end of our practise, our sensei decided to try something new for fun (it being Friday and all). We did randori with 2 nage (pretend you are a couple coming home from the pub, he said).
I found this to be quite a different dynamic from regular randori.
As one of the nage, I found myself thinking more about my partner than myself and my attention kept getting drawn to her rather than focusing on mu shin. As uke, the experience was also somewhat confusing. On one occasion, I was coming in for a shomenuchi strike (with my focus fully on that) when I felt two hands plant solidly on my shoulders from behind. The next thing I knew, I was face down on the mat.

Has anyone else tried this before? We had an interesting discussion afterwards about the best strategies for nage (and uke). I found I couldn't just walk through the attacks as in regular single-nage randori. We figured being stationary and back-to-back might be the best defense (circle the wagons). I'd be interested to hear what others found worked for them and especially what pitfalls to avoid.

Peace,

Paul

Re: Double Randori

We tried that once... . Two nage, and maybe six uke. We did well for a bit, but ended up running over each other as worked our way through the attackers. It was definitely fun, though.

Re: Double Randori

Yep, it is a real blast!

I have been doing it for years, 2 v 3, 3 v 5, 4 v 8, 6 v 12, 8 v 16, ......

I was trying to think what the biggest one was.

The biggest lessons are that there is a tendency (as Sh'te) to attack your fellow Sh'te by accident, instead of the Uke(s)! Friendly Fire!

As Uke you tend to attack with grabs, not strikes!

?

Re: Double Randori

We do this from time to time. attacks vary from grabbing to punching and kicking... it's really a mess, especially to ukes - they could be piled on top of one another in some cases - you really need to have big area to enjoy it more, but its definitely fun.

I mean that you can attack in any way, but as it gets going you tend to start grabbing. Maybe to try and hold them still?

Sometimes we change it so that there is only one attack allowed, like Yokoman Uchi. I have seen Ukes running across the tatami after Sh'te, arm raised like a darlek!!! They didn't catch him!!!

Re: Double Randori

Interesting. I like the concept and will bring it up in our next class with our sr. instructor. Like most Aikido Dojo's we do a lot with randori and multiple attackers, but I haven't done this before. Since we do a great deal with real life situations in our school it will be a good addition.

Re: Double Randori

I've always wondered about this because you see a lot of teamwork/team fighting in Kung Fu and Ninjitsu. I think we are going to have to try it in my dojo!
