Re: Article: What is Zanshin? by Chuck Clark

In my opinion, there is no one out there who explains Japanese concepts in English better than Chuck Clark, at least in terms of martial arts. I have found that there is a corollary in music for the idea of zanshin. I think that zanshin is the pause between when a master musician has finished a piece of music and the applause begins. If you have experienced such a concert, I think that you have experienced zanshin.

Thanks for the article, Mr. Clark

Hi Charles,

I think that at some point, zanshin (in those who have it...) is a quality of who the person is. It isn't a tool, technique, or strategy.

Thanks for reading and your input.

In The Spiritual Foundations of Aikido, William Gleason Sensei quotes Sogen Omori, a master swordsman of the Choku Shinkage style:

"I was attending a certain gathering and noticed an elderly gentleman sitting formally on his knees. After studying him for a few minutes I was amazed to discover that I could find no place of weakness, no opening where he might be attacked. He was sitting calmly, watching the events around him, yet his mind was absolutely clear and in a state of constant readiness. I concluded that this must be the famous Ueshiba-sensei, and I was introduced to him as such a moment later."
